Devin Davis cited for marijuana possession

Recommended Posts

This is blown way out of proportion. It's the offseason. Marijuana has healing properties, and he's still recovering from a head trauma. Yeah you have to know the rules and he's clearly going to pay the price via suspension, but let's not crucify this kid. Geez.

We don't even know the details..who was smoking? Who was holding? Who else was there?

Just relax...

EDIT: I actually don't really care about the details. It was a little pot in the offseason. He wasn't shooting crystal meth or anything. Whatever... I know this is an unpopular opinion so I'll see myself out.

Bye.

This really has moved passed bball at this point. The kid needs some help. Blaming a coach or a system accomplishes nothing. There is an HIV outbreak in part of our State because users do not fear consequences. DD has a pattern of harmful use despite knowing there will likely be negative consequences. I believe that is the very definition of addiction. Providing boundaries, resources or ultimatums mean nothing if the individual has no intrinsic motivation for change. Hope he turns it around so he can have some success in life.

You are a scholarship athlete with chances of making your dreams come true.... But you throw it away bc of weed??? How the hell do you not think about your actions before you act? I mean for real DD you make sure you do everything you can to make it to the nba then you can do whatever you want!

Nobody was smoking, he was cited for possession. Nobody was even arrested. I'm sorry but I fail to see Hanner's guilt in any of this.

No smoking, where did the odor come from, Bob Marley's ghost? Was it was just a mere coincidence DD's room was the room in which the odor was emanating from and he and Hanner were in the room together? The athletic program should have immediately subjected both parties to a drug test. If positive for Hanner - goodbye, even if not positive for Devin - goodbye for having the product in his possession.

Maybe this type of behavior will stop if a couple of players are shown the door in lieu of the "alleged tough love" policy currently in place.

Hanner is on Zero tolerance. DD was not on zero tolerance. Could very well be a player taking the heat to save Hanner at IU...

Just saying it's completely feasible. Still dumb, but I'm not sure you can fully blame either of them with the info we know right now.

*We do know they were both dumb for being in the situation, but to blame just one player doesn't seem right at all.

Lol.. Is crean suppose to get a sleeping bag and have sleepovers with the players? Devin is an adult and this is on him to make better decisions.. Amazing how everyone wants to blame crean for everything

No but Crean should have dropped the hammer last year when all the problems were going on instead of not giving Yogi any punishment and barely giving Stan or Troy anything. He was too worried about saving his job to actually punish the kids.

Disciplinarian is not an adjective I would use for Crean. I think players need an element of fear for their coach. They probably respect Crean and his position, but they don't fear him in it

Crean has done these guys no favors by going light on them. The real world is coming for these guys. Is the fortune 500 company gonna pat you on the back and say its ok, do better next time? These guys are in for a rude awakening.

To everyone being critical of Crean in this situation, nothing he says will be change the players' mindset on weed unless he gives out the correct punishment. I was on the conduct board for my dorm, handing out action plans for those cited for weed and alcohol. The whole point of the action plan is to prevent them from making the same mistake. With weed automatically comes 6 months of probation. We, as the conduct board, decided the rest of the action plan. No matter what we did, the reality was that we had repeat offenders. If someone wants to smoke weed, they are going to smoke weed. The moral of the story is that no matter what Crean says or does, some of his players will smoke weed until they realize just how stupid they are being. Look at Josh Cribbs...

This is what happens when your coach is a pushover and the players don't respect him.

I respected the hell out of my parents. I got a poss of marijuana when I was 19. I am also smoked after that. I am currently a head of the biomedical department of a hospital in Fort Wayne. There is a time and place for weed. That is what I learned. I think he needs to suffer the consequences of his actions but respect of Tom Crean has nothing to do with it.

I disagree. If they respected him, they would not continue to make him look like he is not in control.

There were many things I disliked about The General especially in the latter years of his IU tenure but one thing I liked is how he held his players accountable and how he expected them to represent the university and the basketball program.  I'm tired of this crap!  I badly wanted to see Devin play ball again but after this, go play somewhere else.  Get out of Bloomington and the sooner the better.  And while you're packing your bags help Hanner pack his because I'm also tired of the mollycoddling he's gotten from Crean.  Suspensions and hand slaps are pointless.   Kick their asses out and do it quickly.  Let's see some real backbone from the head coach and the AD.

Right now I say test the whole team weekly and make the results public knowledge.

And get investigated for breaking federal privacy laws in the process?  Pretty sure you can't just release drug tests results for student athletes.

Are all the guys on the team "buddies"? I'm starting to wonder if weed is just part of the culture surrounding this team as a whole.

Weed culture is a big thing everywhere today, not just IU basketball.

Right now I say test the whole team weekly and make the results public knowledge.

Yeah...that's not gonna happen.
