I live here, I understand the NCAA rules...He was at South complaining on Monday to the principal..2 days later....And going to the media with this....It was not that big of a deal...concentration should be on Big 10 not a 30 second chant by seven high school students...mentally tough it out ..

It just had to do with a lot of parents would defend their son in such circumstances. It's not like he had to drive to Bedford. It's 10 minutes down the street. If your kid came into the game and people started chanting, Gentle Dental Sucks, Gentle Dental Sucks, that might be out of bounds. You can damn well bet the south principle wouldn't allow a chant that says he sucks when his kid enters a game.

 

I'm not sure any coaches are locked in the facility, preparing for the B1G and not seeing the light of day. If he's got an hour break, he should probably be able to spend it however he wants.

 

Seriously think if we lose to Northwestern it'll be because he asked the principle of South to get a handle on the student section?

I'm sorry, but this is a bit of a false analogy. For starters, it would be highly unlikely that the proprietor of a Dental office would hear chants directed towards his/her son during a basketball game. What would be their beef?; residual plaque and tartar after an otherwise thorough cleaning, poor flossing techniques?

Tom Crean is the head coach of the state's flag ship university for basketball, in a state that revere's basketball almost as much as Christianity. His "product" happens to be far below standards, and his personality is usually defensive, dismissive, arrogant, or all of the above. It doesn't mean that students should embarrass a coach's son, but it does explain it, and it should have given Tom and his wife cause to beware of such occurrences, given the circumstances. If I'd been Tom, I should have made very little of the incident, (for obvious reasons, I most certainly would not have addressed it with the principle, or the students ), and only if his son broached the subject, would I have discussed it. Just my opinion.

Definitely being blown out of proportion. Apparently my original post was worded to make it sound like the entire gym was chanting it, but that wasn't the case at all. There was a small group doing it and trying to get others involved but it never really spread. It was definitely being chanted, but not to the effect that some "journalists" have portrayed it.
Edit: Looking back, I guess it was a bit misleading and I apologize for that. Should have provided better context.

The original story which had some legs nationally was that Indiana fans taunted Coach Creans son. The defense is that Indiana fans did no such thing. Instead it was a small group of HS kids from the rival HS.

The reason people bring who did this to the discussion is not to defend them but to point out first this was not Indiana fans and secondly that it was a couple HS kids from the rival HS.

If you have not been to a HS game recently then you should go just to observe. Sit near the student section and you will hear a lot of things that should not be said. Most schools have a teacher or AD nearby to keep them in check.

It just isn't high school many of the college fan bases are out of bounds with their comments as well. It becomes a sordid game of one upmanship in an attempt to distract the opposing team and fan base. A few years ago Xavier had a serious issue and has somewhat corrected that issue. Many times it is the mob mentality where some cowards feel safe in numbers.  I am convinced those punks would not have said what they did to any of the Creans faces.
