Strange article, Bob.

I felt like that was a 1,000 word apology for his tweet.

That, or he was doing two things to the fans:

1. Baiting them to read his article.
2. Setting fans up for the disappointment many are going to have when Crean is retained.

I want Stevens (not gonna happen) as bad as anyone, but Glass will not fire Crean. It's all about the cash, and costing your department 12 mil is not something glass is going to do if he can help it. In the meantime, apathy spreads east of the Wabash.

That Crean will now be fired for missing the NCAA tourney for the second year in a row (barring a late season comeback) and we hire a HOME RUN coach (Stevens fits here). Who do you think stays and who do you think transfers? I think if we get a great hire we can retain key players, if not, we could see a lot of players leave with him. Although, that may be a good thing.

This team doesn't look like a team that is typically competitive in the Big 10. We don't have the physical strength that is capable of competing in a game or can take the pounding of a season. If players leave, hopefully a new coach has a pipeline of players that would love the opportunity to play for IU. Bringing in size and strength in the post would be a priority along with depth at the point.

A new coach would understand he would have to be prepared to restock the roster.

Not to call you out specifically because I think a lot of people have forgotten, but Crean's buyout does drop to $7.5 mil on July 1.

Kravitz' tweet is MUCH closer to the truth than that mish-mash article he wrote is. Getting your press credentials threatened can be a very enlightening experience, evidently.

Sounds like something Crean would do too

Plus, regardless of the number/when it happens, they won't come remotely close to the buyout amount everyone sees. Between the mitigation clause and whatever other lawyer stuff goes down, it won't be all that much.

Also, I am fairly certain the buyout can be paid over a number of years. Anyone confirm that?

Yes that is generally how it goes in the negotiation of it.  The University has the money for the buyout if they want to pull the trigger.

There is always a negotiation and the University has some leverage with when the drop to 7.5 mil happens in the summer.

Yeah, but who's going to fire a college coach in July? Got to give it to Crean, he has some smart lawyers.

If Glass wants to fire him it is a simple conversation.  Coach we can fire you today and pay you $9 million of the buyout you have due or we will fire you in July when the buyout is $7.5 million.  Take your pick.

Last year on the IU Scout board, there was a very level-headed discussion about potential coaching candidates to replace Crean. The staff on that board did an interview with Crean, and a short time later, the thread mysteriously disappeared.

Big Brother is watching.

I'm pretty sure the July thing is the start of a new year for the school rather than a savvy lawyer move. Someone please correct me if I'm off base.

That's basically how I took it. If not, then Glass really screwed himself over on that one. Still, having the buyout drop in July gives Glass more leverage if they discuss a settlement beforehand.
