Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

For anyone saying we couldn't land the big name coach...

Look at Michigan and Harbaugh. If you price it right, many coaches would make the jump. Loyalty to schools or employers isn't all it's cracked up to be. You want a big boy coach, pony up and make him come here.

Outside of K, Self, Cal & Roy... You can sway them with $$

I agree that money can sway a coach, but Harbaugh isn't the best example. His salary with UM is the same as it was with the 49ers. And I would wager other NFL franchises would have been in line with that dollar amount as well.

Stevens aside, I just don't see anyone that makes a ton of sense.

Please not Shaka, Miller, ugh...

Agree with you on Shaka, Miller is questionable. He looks like a good hire, but so did Crean at the time. He really only has one run in the tournament to look at. His brother is a good coach so I would lean towards him being a good coach, but I am not sure I am ready to give it to him following TC. I think you are right Brad Stevens needs to be everyone's focus!!!

Any hire is going to have some risk, even Stevens.

Keeping Crean probably has more risk. He will have to perform at a higher level than His last four years here plus his time at Marq. He will have to do that while having things stacked against him in recruiting (air of doubt about his tenure).

Crean was sitting in a great place mid year and has the easy part of the schedule ahead of him. And yet for the third year in a row his teams underperform down the stretch. His coaching and the on court results have put him in this place and I think it is unrecoverable.

there are like 20 coaches that all make more sense than Crean. Only a few have even mentioned Matta and he had done more at OSU in 10 years than Crean has done at Marquette and Indiana in 17 years. In all reality, he did more in a 5 year period than Crean has done in his entire career

Say we can't lure any of those 3... How would you like us to proceed? Just honest curiosity because I don't know how I would like it to go

I would put Hoiberg at #4, the ceiling at an IU is higher than it is at ISU but he's at his alma mater.  I wouldn't go much further down the list than that though.  I'm not big on Bennett, and I'd like to see more from Archie Miller than what is just one tourney run right now; I mean Crean had one run when we hired him and he's wildly mediocre as a coach.

My wife says she can't stand looking at Matta so that means he's off the list. It's official.

I'm not sure how long Matta's career is going to be. The guy has chronic back issues...even has a special chair on the sidelines.

Have to get an answer before you get rid of Crean, though.

IU can't make a change and take a chance on some up and comer. Make sure.

id rather take a chance on an up and comer then know under crean that it's not getting better. Just give anyone I chance at this point. At least I would have more hope with anyone but crean coaching. To quote Dennis green he is what we know he is.

No, we can't afford to do that.

We're not going to hand Crean a $12 million buyout check just to give the keys to a young up and comer like Archie Miller.  Indiana University basketball is not in a position to do that right now.  He's a good coach, but we can't bank on a relatively unproven 36 year old A-10 coach to lead us back to greatness.

We're only going to make a change if we have a pretty good idea we can make a home run hire.  Like I said on another board, the back channels are going to be utilized long before anything is made public.

No. Go read most Wizards fan board/site they hate him. Even after they finally had success they wanted to go somewhere else

No college coaching / recruiting experience and the NBA is a whole different type of ballgame.  And I would feel the same way about Keith Smart's name being mentioned or Calbert C., even though he has been working as a college assistant coach for Jim Crews at St. Louis.
