Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

1) Stevens

2) Hoiberg

3) Bennett

4) Donovan

5) Marshall

One of these or nothing

Here's the thing, it is highly unlikely we get any of 1 through 4.

1. Stevens is currently in a top 3 coaching job in all of sports.  I know many think he'd leave that for IU and maybe he would but I don't see it.

2. Hoiberg is known as the Mayor in Ames.  He went to Iowa State.  He's not leaving.

3. Bennett is arguably the most likely of this group but he has a great situation in Virginia.  Does he leave that AND overlook the fact that IU fired his sister?

4. Donovan: I don't understand why he'd leave Florida.  He can compete in the SEC every year, has great weather and a fanbase that won't come after him if a couple things go wrong.  Also he makes a ton of money at a University that will have the funds to step up and pay him more if anyone comes calling.

Marshall would probably take the job though assuming someone else doesn't come in and offer him something better.

Is there a reason people are listing Hoiberg? In all reality, he will only leave his alma mater for the NBA. No reason for him to leave Iowa State for IU, that would be a step back at this point.

Hoiberg at 2 for me. If I couldn't get 1 or 2 it's no change for me.

Love Hoiberg as well. I just think Marshall is a better coach. Every coach I had on my list I think are an upgrade over Crean and we would have a shot at.

The biggest indicators for success in March is halcourt offense and defensive ability. That's why I wouldn't just limit my choice to only Stevens or Hoiberg. Creans biggest weaknesses are what is proven for success come March. So I would make a move for the other names I listed in my top 5 and there are some others I think would be an upgrade over Crean as well.

Just dont think kids want to play that style these days. Now, if the guy can take 3 star kids and mold them into a competitive team on the national scene year in and year out then ok, maybe.

So you assume a guy that played for RMK about 30 years ago and has been in the NBA since then would trend more towards his playing days than what he is doing now?

We can talk about this til we are blue in the face fellas but it doesn't mean squat if Crean doesn't get fired. Does anyone foresee a situation that leads to Crean getting canned after this season?

Lose our next three and drop out of the tournament picture. There would be A LOT of pressure on Glass if that happens.

Yea, the only way I see this coming to fruition is if we lose tonight, to MSU and first round BTT.

Honestly depending on our matchup in the BTT, I could see it.

As could I... late season dropoff once again. If it means long-term success though, I'm okay with losing these last three.

A loss tonight would not be good. If we split the last two games and barely scrape our way into the NCAA then lose quickly there pressure will build. If we lose bad in any if those losses or if there is some coaching decisions that look bad pressure builds more.

That alone might do it but maybe not. If you then combine that with news that Troy and Yogi are leaving I say there will be a run in pitchforks.

IMO I would rather have a interim coach for 2-3 years if that means we get Stevens at the end of year 3.

Me too, im not really up on coaches outside of the B1G and top level schools, but I just feel that going out and getting the first guy we see (unless stevens, which I could see coming to the program like you suggest).....would just be a huge mistake i feel.....and honestly right now i dont see IU looking for a coach right now

Some of the names that are tossed around amaze me. After Davis, Sampson and Crean you would think that people would be more rational when discussing a future coach. Why would we want to take a huge gamble on a young coach that has had some success in a mediocre conference? Or an NBA coach that has no experience coaching, recruiting or the many other responsibilities of a coach in the college ranks?

I'm not getting any younger. If we're getting rid of Crean we better be bringing in someone that is an elite and proven college coach so we can turn this around quickly without any learning curves.

If I'm Glass my home run hire list is:

1. Brad Stevens
2. Billy Donovon
3. Tony Bennett

Then I'd be thinking

1. Fred Hoiberg
2. Gregg Marshall

If none of these guys are interested in the job then I'm not sure I'd can Crean. I'd also seriously question our administration's dedication and competence.
