Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

I'm all about putting feelers out but we shouldn't be shocked if it comes back to bite us. If we are putting feelers out we have to be certain we are making a change. The last thing we need is a Tim Miles telling recruits that he's been approached by IU for the job. If we aren't making a change and that happens our recruiting will slide even further.

Off the record isjust that. Coaches have contracts that stipulate exactly this. That's why you have go betweens like Eddie Fogler contact agents. Coaches certainly wouldn't discuss this with recruits if they didn't want it getting back to their schools. It happens everyday; just look at the Cubs. We would win big playing this game, and the length of a season puts the ball in our court.

Honesty if we are looking at an IU guy... Tom Crean is a better option than any IU guy. I would like Crews if he was younger. If you make a change you gotta go with someone outside.

A lot of people disagree, but Idk why we have to have an IU guy. If he can coach, who cares where he's from?

First of all we have a coach. And second, if we are making a change, why are y'all bent on stealing a B1G coach away from his team/job? That will never end well.

Only if your the school that loses his coach. Indiana could take any B1G coach with the exception of one; maybe two with the momentum of Belien at Michigan. Matta would take it; its his dream job just like Stevens.

I disagree Crean is better than an IU guy, but I agree you need to look outside IU first and foremost. Just look at Michigan football as a perfect example. Rich Rod had it going on then they hire a train wreck although he still beat us. Their next hire will be right though with Harbaugh who's a Michigan grad.

And then when it's mentioned "off the record" to someone else is it still "off the record?"  If a coach who was happy at his current school could use this to get a recruit wouldn't you think he would?  There are a few coaches out there that I would be willing to put feelers out to but they're not at jobs that wold effect recruiting.  Coach Crean is still the coach for the foreseeable future and hindering his ability to get recruits will only cause more harm than good at this point.

I went back on the old Scout site recently and the majority of posters there want an "IU guy," feeling that's the only option outside of Stevens.

It reminds me of all the Michigan football fans saying they need a "Michigan man" if they ever want to be elite again, apparently not realizing they're about to fire one.

It's time we get real with this...exactly what needs to happen on the football field too...SPEND more $$$ on big name coach = wins

most of the time... haha

With that being said...I would absolutely love to have Richard Pitino coach IU. Dude would win a lot here I think.

Izzo had strong interest in coming here last time. He backed off because of Crean and would likely not want to replace him if a changes is made.

The primary point is that there could be a lot of high end coaches that would surprise us with their interest.

Its gonna be Richard Pitino. I believe him and his father want him to land at Indiana. They seem to have been working towards making that happen. Richard is an up and coming Head Coach has been mentored by his Dad and Billy Donovan. We need a young, energetic hire and I believe that Richard will blossom into a top notch Head Coach and bring some excitement to Bloomington.

Crean is fairly young himself. I think Crean ends up fine here and we will see how this season goes first. But I see no reason to bring ANY coach here who doesn't have a better track record than Crean. That just feels like "the next shiny thing" to me personally. I'm happy with what we have as long as the thee performs this year.

Richard Pitino...Heaven help us. I'm not saying he's not a decent coach, but in terms of "fit" and I can think of lots other candidates that would better connect with Indiana and Indiana high school coaches. We don't need excitement and fireworks...we need someone who gets it!

I would not consider Pitino. So many other names brought up into this thread that seem a better hire. Stevens is under contract for 5 more years, he will not last that long given the state of the roster. Donavon is staying where he is. Hes turned down NBA riches already. I do believe in finding an up and coming young coach. We did that in Knights hiring situation. Hoiberg is a good coach, but he is an alumni where he is.

I love Hoiberg ( I remember when he was a Pacer ) but I can't see "The Mayor" leaving Ames.

If we want to take a chance on a young up-and-coming coach, I'll put Billy Donlon from Wright State in for consideration. He's good. Recruits a lot of players from Indiana, so he has connections in the state. Dad was a coach; an assistant under Pitino, I believe. There are other good young up-and-comers to consider if IU wants to go that route.

My first choice would still be Stevens.
