Magnanimous

Indiana won't be Indiana until it wants to be Indiana

Some of you who follow college basketball overall very closely give me some input. What were Creans teams like at Marquette?

Most of my memories of him at Marquette were pacing and clapping. In fact, when he was hired my wife asked me who he was. My reply to her was "remember that guy I commented about pacing constantly a couple weeks ago? That's him"

My question is regarding the style his teams played there. I don't recall him ever having a team that featured bigs inside. His best big men always seemed to float outside if I recall correctly. I don't remember his team's being strong enough defensively that they could really lock down another team when they were have a bad offensive night and still beat them. Am I wrong on these recollections?

If this year was judged by itself I would really not have to many concerns. A series of events has conspired to make us a very perimeter oriented team. My concern comes from the fact that when I look at his long term record this is just who he is. It's what he believes is/can be successful.

Same as here. He had Novak. Tall kid that played on the perimeter. Several wings ala Troy. My local product Dominic James ( who Mike Davis didnt want) at point was his Yogi.

For some of the older posters( I'm 36) when did Indiana stop being the indiana program you grew up with? No matter what happens with the program moving forward indiana will always be special to me (that's the way it is in this state passed on from dads to sons) my 3 year old wears is candy stripes and says go Iu , yogi for 3, purdue and Illini blah. The moment for me that I realized our program was heading in a downward trend was when we lost 2 straight years by 20 Pts to Pepperdine and St. John's

I feel This program will get back to a form of its oldself, selfishly because I want my kid to feel the joys watching an Iu team compete at the highest level. I have found having a 3 year old pat u on the back and say it's ok dad Iu will win another day helps soften a loss as I get older

Well, it's not meant to be really. It's only meant to show that in my opinion, we're kidding ourselves if, (as Purdue fans have for years), we think this program is going to win a championship or is likely to win one in the coming years. It'd be like trying to kill an elephant with a pop gun. Crean will always put together pop gun teams. Duke, Kentucky, and others bring serious artillery to the fight.

Sadly, I've pretty much come to concur with those sentiments.

Not really what you're looking for, but I remember watching Marquette and Pitt play in the Big East Tournament that year. Both Dixon and Crean were being mentioned on various sites as coaching targets for IU, and I'm watching these two guys act like maniacs on the sidelines and thinking "Wow, I hope we don't end up with either of these guys!"

Nothing really to do with their coaching at that point, they're both just ridiculous and annoying on the sidelines.

hasnt Indiana been bringing a pop gun team to the tourney since 1995? I'm not sure its a crean problem as much as a Indiana program problem. Just take a look at the results in the tourney since 95 (outside the run in 02) regardless of who's coaching we expect better results

True enough, but then, we've not had a great coach here since Knight, and Knight's teams weren't all that great towards the end. I think this had more to do with his attitude towards the game than the game having passed him by.

At the rate our University's leaders are going, we may not see another great coach like Knight at IU again.

Lol. I remember watching that same tournament (same game I believe)and while I don't really remember to much about the action I remember the way Crean frenetically paced the sideline and drank diet cokes. I've really got nothing against his mannerisms. JUST WIN

Please, how does one defeat a Zone?

Distort it, collapse it, make two or three defenders guard one offensive player then find the open man. Easier said than done many times. Kind of a simplistic explanation.

i hope you are wrong my fellow hoosier basketball fan It doesn't good now but hopefully things will change If my kids grow up to become Iu fans (like they have a choice) I want them to experience Iu basketball like I did in the 80s and early 90s. A lot of work ahead for this program in all areas but I think we can get there again

Don't care would have to be less than 1%. I'm not in Btown but travel a lot of the state and talk to many IU fans. Only fans I interact with that want him are on here. Nearly every fan I talk to in person think its time for a new coach. Again, I dont get around Btown much. 70-75% gone 20-25% stay IMO. This isnt Gallup.

I agree. Nearly every single person I talk IU basketball is frustrated and wants to move on. Literally the only person I've had to debate in regards to keeping Crean is my fiancee's uncle, who happens to be a Purdue fan. I think it speaks volumes that our rivals fans actually want Crean to stay at Indiana as long as possible. They're having a blast with him patrolling the IU sidelines.

It really depends who you talk to.  Most of my friends from college are in the camp of wait and see what happens this year and next.  I would say the same about most IU fans I talk to when I go out to bars in NYC.

I haven't found a place or talked to anyone with the anti-Crean fervor that I see on here.

I have hope that we will once again be at the top. I refuse to believe otherwise. Success at this level has little to do with the name on the front of the jersey. Its about having an elite coach at an elite program. Having the right guy changes everything.

For sure. I haven't spoken to any IU fans in NYC but there is definitely a rapidly growing mob here in Indiana. All you have to do is go to a game at AH and listen to the amount of fans who boo him during the game.
