The main reason Crean will get fired.

Recommended Posts

Just a thought. Other than Benson, and Tolbert, I don't really recall a dominant IU big man in Knights system. It seems to me that was the knock on him also, and he won a heck of a lot of games. Don't get me wrong, he had a few over the years. But no lottery picks or anything that I can remember. Blab? Collier transferred, Haston was pretty good! Daryl Thomas was undersized center. Maybe I am missing someone. I have to agree with a lot on here. I was not and have not been happy with all of Crean's coaching...playcalling, philosophy, etc. But I relly want this program to have a great year. Go Hoosiers!

Zeller got most of his by beating everyone down the court, there were a lot of posts about how we didn't properly utilize him in the half court.

Crean doesn't utilize big men that well, and if he can't adjust his system to do so he's pretty one dimensional as a coach.  Not a good thing IMO.  Even Calipari adjusted his system to take advantage of having Randle down low.

Calipari let Randle do most of his work getting the ball at the mid level and facing up.  2 or 3 dribbles and a shot/foul.  Randle rarely played the deep post in the offensive sets.  It was more pro style with Randle playing like a power 4 or extremely powerful 3.

Vonleh played much, much more like a 5 in Crean's system than Randle ever did.  I actually would have liked to see more of Vonleh in the spots that Randle was getting the ball.

Cody is an odd one to figure out.  He is getting his points in the NBA much like he did at IU.  He still isn't using that 15 foot jumper like we all thought we should/could.  Maybe it wasn't on Crean as much as it was, what Zeller was most comfortable with???  IDK.

I think the main reason, if it happens is that the fans/players will have lost faith in him to get us to Elite status as an IN GAME coach.  The off the court issues amplify the rest but it has been the in game coaching that has been his biggest detriment in my estimation.

Alan Henderson-Dean Garret both pretty dominant.

I agree on Garrett. But wasn't Henderson really a 4? And again Garrett was a JUCO right? I am not saying RMK didn't have any good post players. It just seems to me that everyone used to get upset that we didn't have a dominant center back then too. That being said. The days of Ewing, Sampson, and Jabbar are over with in college bball anyways. Those players are the likes of what those teams had to contend with. It seems that all the NEW style centers are Kevin Garnett type players. I know we talk about all the bigs that Gonzaga gets, but how many of those guys have gone on to have big NBA careers?

Sixth Man

Say what u want about Crean, but he does a better job of player development than most coaches. It makes me laugh to see UNLV suck because they beat us out for some of our targets. Okonoboh could have been a solid player.
I believe he seems to have a knack for maybe spotting a hidden talent with wings and guards...haven't seem it to much with bigs though.

I think creanapologist was right on target with his observation. Zeller was the perfect big for Creans preferred style of play. Mobile, able to put it on the floor a little, didn't really demand a lot of touches in the low post.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember his Marquette teams ever having a strong offensive post presence. It seemed like his big guys always got their offense either through being able to play on the perimeter or cleaning up the garbage inside. Never watched them to much...his sideline demeanor annoyed the hell out of me!

Watch at about the 1:18 mark.

before Henderson got hurt? Probably the best Indiana team I've ever seen. 75 &76 were before I moved to Indiana and became a fan. 81 team was amazing at the end of the year but...those games against Michigan and the fab five? Henderson whooping it up on the scorers table in Ann Arbor?I felt like I was punched in the stomach when I heard the news about Henderson. They'd gotten so close the previous year and I felt they really got screwed by the refs against Duke. You could tell that Knight really liked that team and that group of kids went through a lot and accomplished so much!I just KNEW they were gonna hang banner six!

Henderson played the 5 out of necessity, but he was dominant. Bobby's motion offense was pass first then again until someone got the best open look. His players fit the system; isolation plays were only used sparingly like I Thomas in the 81 champ game against NC. Knight did adapt to who he played though. He ran with and beat UNLV in 87 when others thought he would be crazy to do so. He also turned Thomas loose in 81 after saddling him most of his career. Knight could game plan better than any. His final four record speaks for itself.

Then you probably don’t remember the screw job the refs did agains Steve Downing in the '73 semi-final with UCLA. What should have been Walton's 5th foul was called as #4 on Downing, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Downing was not a dominant big man, but he could hold his own. Had it not been for the phantom call against him, Knight could have had his first title and Indiana's 3rd. They finished 22-6 with Buckner, Downing, Laskowski, Crews, et al.

Don't remember it...but I've read about it.

I was only speaking to the teams that I'd actually seen play since I became a fan in about 78. That's when I moved to Indiana as a child.
