I don't see him coming back this year to play. Report I heard said his injury was serious. I wouldn't want him to risk a concussion or other injury so soon after an injury like this. I am sure he will be back on the bench at some point, but not tonight. He left his sister's game at halftime. It was good to see him out, but I hope they don't rush him into doing too much too soon.

I am curious how his academics will be handled for eligibility. Did he have to withdraw and does that affect his standing?  I would assume there is a method to get an NCAA waiver if it is a problem

My wife works in the student services department at a local D1 school. She said that there are strict rules in place for handling this. She was doubtful that he would (be required to) withdraw. It’s more likely that the provisions for disabled students would kick in, even if the disability is temporary. However, she is unsure about the athletics/eligibility part of this. Clearly he is not able to do the classwork at this time.

I’d think that Marni Mooney and her team would be on top of this, as well.

IMO, he should take a redshirt season, and work on getting healthy before attempting to rejoin the team for this season. Even in Indiana, some things are bigger than basketball.

Thanks. This isn't like an ACL tear or other injury that a student could keep up with by using tutors and other methods. I would think his recovery would make it difficult to concentrate for long periods of time. I am thinking back to the concussions I had and how they affected me for a short time. The important thing is he has made big improvement. I agree a red shirt decision is the best for him. That would eliminate a decision to bring him back too soon.

Did I hear the TV announcers say something about they hope he gets to play this year?

Wonder if that was just a general statement---- or based on some kind of inside info?

Next year makes the most sense to me---- but he does appear to be making great progress.

Anybody hearing anything?

Once again, I think he plays this year and I believe he is rehabbing with that in mind. I think the cutoff should be the middle of January. If he is capable of participating fully in practice at that point, let him play. If not, redshirt him. There is going to be an adjustment period in which he needs to get back into shape and integrated with the team. Obviously nobody is interested in compromising his long-term health by rushing him back too quickly.

I just don't know if it's a good idea to put him in a game this year, even if he recovers in time and is medically cleared to play.

I'm just thinking "worst case scenario" if he were to play this year.  Now, obviously his health and life are way more important than anything related to basketball, but imagine if he does in fact heal quickly, and finds his way into a game in late February.  What if he took an inadvertent elbow to the head, causing some type of longer term injury, or worse?

Can you imagine the PR hit that Fred Glass, Tom Crean, and Indiana University would take for putting him into a game, just a few months removed from a hairline fracture to his skull?

For all parties involved, but mostly for Devin's long term health and ability to live a normal life, it just makes sense to give him a year to get better, back in shape, and fully healthy.

I agree here, but with the severity of his injury, he won't be in a game until there are 2nd, 3rd, 4th ( and so on) opinions. Every necessary step will be well thought out and taken before he touches the floor whether that's this year or next.

I'm sorry, but this thought is just selfish on your part. His long term health is the most important thing. I too, wish he could be on the floor, but, this cannot be rushed.

I think everyone is operating under the belief that his long term health is the most important thing.  The post you quoted didn't seem too selfish at all.
