Illinois tried making Monty Williams one of the top paid coaches in the country. Lol I feel comfortable that they won't be dangerous anytime soon.

That's an odd choice to make one of the top-paid coaches in the country.  I think they should try and pry Hoiberg away from Chicago, but that'll be an interesting vacancy to keep an eye on because they're rumored to also be targeting Cuonzo Martin, who is also on Mizzou's list.

Monty Williams would have been an awesome hire. Idk if you have paid attention to the NBA but he may not have had a ton of success but the respect he has in the league is crazy. When he lost his wife my whole twitter feed was people saying sorry. Has connections to USA basketball as well. Popovich has already said if he were to call it quits he would want Monty to take over. That is the best reference any coach out there could use on their resume. He isn't one of those washed up guys who became an assistant after being a horrible coach. He would have made me worry about Illinois again I know that.

Just chucking money at a popular NBA guy isn't going to automatically make you a successful program.

Didn't say that, but they could have done a lot worse. The Lovie Smith thing is far off with this. Lovie had no other options but to come to college. Monty has plenty of interest. He got a raw deal in New Orleans too. With that said I think it is harder to come from NBA to college than vice versa. If your not used to the grind of recruiting non stop it can wear ya down and in the NBA their main focus is development. I find it funny he was just fired and they already have a rumor of a offer rejected. If they won the Rutgers game they would have probably been in and firing Groce then wouldnt have made sense. Kinda weird timing for this.

In the Woj article he said he expects Monty to be one of the top candidates for any NBA job that opens up as well as Pop wanting him to take over. I find it very confusing why Illinois tried to get him. Does anyone know how much the offer was?
