Stuhoo Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 Court docs reveal more on Purdue guard Cline's arrest Probable cause says Purdue guard was passed out with foot on accelerator, revving the engine, when police found him in June incident. Buy Photo (Photo: John Terhune/Journal & Courier) STORY HIGHLIGHTS WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue men's basketball opens the season with two important contributors suspended — and both were involved with incidents including a vehicle and marijuana. Purdue announced before Tuesday's exhibition game against Southern Indiana that sophomore guard Ryan Cline has been suspended for three games for a violation of team rules. Cline missed the exhibition, and also will miss the closed scrimmage vs. West Virginia and the season opener vs. McNeese State. Junior forward Basil Smotherman was previously suspended for the same three contests. According to an affidavit for probable cause, Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy Kenton Mustain was dispatched on June 27 to the area of Dunbar Road and State Road 38 just north of the intersection for an unresponsive person locked in a black Lexus. Mustain said he found Cline unresponsive with his foot on the gas pedal and the engine revving. Mustain said Cline did not respond when he knocked on both the driver's and passenger's side windows. Mustain said he could not tell if Cline was breathing or not and thought he could be in medical crisis, so he decided to break out the passenger window. After breaking the window, Mustain said he unlocked the door and turned off the ignition. He then performed sternum rubs to wake Cline up and called for medics because Cline "was not readily responsive and extremely lethargic." Mustain said he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car. Mustain said he found a plastic bag containing green leafy substance as well as an orange prescription pill bottle with a small amount of green leafy substance in the middle consul cup holder of the Lexus. The total weight was less than 30 grams. Mustain's report said the violation occurred at 9:53 a.m. According to online court records, Cline was charged with one count of possession of marijuana in Hamilton County on July 11. He entered into a pretrial diversion program on Aug. 5. Smotherman was charged with possession of paraphernalia after a June 5 traffic stop in Hancock County. He has a pretrial conference scheduled for Dec. 1. "It is unfortunate" Purdue coach Matt Painter said after Tuesday's exhibition. "You want guys to flourish and take this opportunity and springboard not just into a great career but a great life. They have an unbelievable advantage on other people having this opportunity, but also, there has to be some order. These things can sometimes be a blessing in disguise where some guys have some public humiliation. "… You want it to not so much be a punishment as a consequence." Cline played in all 35 games for Purdue last season as a reserve. The Carmel native averaged 3.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 13.6 minutes while shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point range. Painter said the suspensions provided an opportunity for other players to step up on a competitive roster. "Three or four years ago, we didn't have a bunch of players," Painter said. "We have a bunch of players. If people don't want to do what they're supposed to, like tonight, other people play. That's on them. I think we've got some guys on our team that they lick their chops when things like that happen." Purdue also played without sophomore forward Jacquil Taylor on Tuesday, leaving them with seven active scholarship players. Quote

I'd actually prefer we stay away from them unless they fall into our lap due to a relationship or something. But, I do think we need, and would like to see us consistently have, around 3-4 guys in that 15-30 range at most times. Those borderline 5*/high 4* guys that are McDonalds All-American's but likely to be around 2-3 years. Other than Vonleh, that's the space Crean has largely played in with his "stud" recruits (Zeller, Yogi, JBJ, Bryant) and when he's had 3-4 of them it's paid dividends. If we always have some of those guys on the roster I think we're competing in the Big Ten and nationally very consistently. Hovadipo, GloryDays, WayneFleekHoosier and 2 others 5 Quote
