I didn’t know that either. I also thought you could re-establish and catch. If that’s the case, and I doubt Bilas to be wrong on it, that’s pretty blatant and should be addressed by the B1G.

BTW, just read the rule on going out of bounds and it is different in high school and NCAA.  In high school, if you step out of bounds 'voluntarily', it is a violation (which would result in a turnover).  A whistle is to blow the ball dead and the possession becomes the other team's ball.  Assume refs use discretion here because it would seem silly for a player on defense to be allowed to go out of bounds and force the offense to re-inbound the ball.  There is no rule at the high school level, however, against a player going out of bounds non-voluntarily and then reestablishing in bounds and being the next player to touch the ball.

At the college level, it is not a violation to go out of bounds but you can not be the next player to touch the ball.

It gets even worse...I ran the video back.  Even if the rule WAS that you could re-establish and be the first to touch the ball, he DIDN'T.  Looks out of bounds to me and even if he wasn't, he didn't have both feet back in bounds when he caught it.

Edit:  zooming in, it is clear his right foot is clearly out bounds and looks like his left foot isn't in bounds either.

He also doesn’t establish himself back in bounds before receiving the pass, so if I’m understanding you here, he broke 2 rules lol.

Even if he had established himself back in play it was still a violation because he went out on his own volition. He wasn't bodied out/forced out and his momentum didn't take him out. When going OOB on your own volition you cannot be the next one to touch the ball regardless of reestablishing yourself.

This was called often several years back. I remember several calls going against IU when a player was running the baseline and stepped out of bounds then received a pass. I know it happened several times in the Crean era.

Crean had guys that liked to shoot corner 3s and shuffled their feet out of bounds trying to get into their shot. If I remember correctly Newkirk was one of the Oft offenders. But there were several. Mind blowing. Anyway, it’s a different situation a little and refs like to call this one.

 

And it appears they blew the call last night.

This rule surely changed in the 25-plus years since Brian Evans played at IU, right? Watching him run the baseline, even we’ll OOB, is one of my earliest memories watching the hoosiers

My favorite part of this OSU thing is Buckeye Twitter collectively tying themselves into knots trying to reinterpret the rule. Seriously, what’s wrong with just going with, “Man, did we catch a great break”, and heading on down the road? But, no, they are losing their $hit over the mere suggestion that they got lucky.

Crean always out thought the room. Why play on a 94'x50' court when you can get several feet on either end to run more sets?!

I think it's pretty simple... Big Ten refs are complete garbage. How they have jobs outside a McDonald's is beyond me.

They're not as terrible when they officiate other conferences or noncon games. What happens between those games and Big 1.o games?

It's a feature, not a bug. Big 1.0 wants games officiated this way. And sadly it will push people away from the product.

I couldn't tell ya. I don't think they are even good in non con games. And they still get so much worse in conference games. It'd be nice if some coaches got the balls to speak up about it. And some ADs.
