8bucks Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 So I'm watching Dayton beat the snot out of Rhode Island. Dayton is No. 6 in the country and will be 22-2 after this blowout is complete. ... Anthony Grant, an alum, is the coach and appears to be doing a great job. He was very good at VCU, then not-so good at Alabama. Shaka Smart also was very good at VCU, but has been considered a failure at Texas and barring a major turnaround, this likely will be his last season there. Just a few years ago, he was the next big thing. ... John Groce was pretty good at Ohio U., but failed at Illinois. ... There are myriad examples like this: The hot coach from a mid-major goes to a Power 5 school and ... stinks. Will Grant become a hot commodity again, or will the Alabama failure scare people off? Or since he is at his alma mater, will he be content to just stay there, perhaps realizing that that level is appropriate for him? Why are there coaches who seem to hit their ceiling at that level and for some reason, can't carry their success over to a Power 5 program? What would've happened had Few taken the IU job when we offered years ago? Or had he gone to the Pac-12 when he flirted with UCLA a few years back? He said he was happy in Spokane and thought he could win a natty at Gonzaga. He hasn't, but he has been to a Final Four and to the Elite Eight a couple other times. All these examples have me curious, because I know of a Power 5 school that has a coach from a mid-major that so far, doesn't seem to be working out. I'm asking for a friend, if you will ... LOL! Is it easy to climb to a lofty status when you don’t play in a tough conference? Instead of having a tough game every time you might face NCAA tournament caliber teams only a few times in conference play. This allows you to stack up wins and build confidence. When you do occasionally play bigger programs they are not as familiar with your style so perhaps that gives you an edge to some extent. I suppose coaches could also change what and how they do things. Maybe they can really motivate the 3 star kids to play better against the higher ranked kids. JerryYeagley23 Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 Glad Illinois showed up to play in the second half. Turned a snooze fest into a heck of a college basketball game. Sparty choking and Izzo crying as usual. Quote

JerryYeagley23 Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 Sparty survives by 1 on a put back dunk. They looked terrible. Ayo Dosunmo for ILL looked like he might have torn his ACL on the last play of the game. Stuhoo 1 Quote

Hovadipo Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 That was gross. Brutal ending. Hate it for Ayo, but Illinois’ trash arse front runner fanbase can eat butts. mdn82, woodenshoemanHoosierfan, Class of '66 Old Fart and 1 other 2 2 Quote

Yeah -- that didn't look good. I remember when Verdell Jones and OG had their injuries -- they didn't look too bad. Verdell just planted on a drive and OG just landed after a dunk. Looked very ordinary. The knee is very fickle. Quote

Yeah, and it’s a weird injury when it happens because it’s season-over, but you’re not in an incredible amount of pain, you just know that there’s nothing there anymore holding leg together. Maybe not the case here, but just because he got up and was helped off doesn’t mean it wasn’t serious. He didn’t put any pressure on it, which probably means he couldn’t. Some people tear ACLs and don’t even get them replaced. You can function with it torn, but it can give at any minute and high level activity is not an option. Again, maybe just sprained or strained something, but that motion where the whole body moves laterally away from a planted foot is how knees pop. Quote

I think they were #51 in the NET today. A road win at UVA almost surely would have given us another quad 1 win, for the moment. Not that I’m confident it will even matter anymore, but certainly intriguing. Quote
