Sporting News Picks IU to finish 10th in B1G

Recommended Posts

I agree there is little value in preseason rankings.

For example: I wonder where Dayton was ranked nationally in last year's preseason? They had a pretty good run, didn't they?

Agreed. Hell, Nebraska was picked to finish last in last years pre-season.

The thing is, we probably have the highest ceiling of any team in the B1G. That obviously goes hand-in-hand with inexperience, but we have an incredible group of sophomores who all improved greatly over the course of the season. I expect them to come in looking way better than we are giving them credit for. Even if HMP only improves to 5 ppg and 5 rebs in about 25-30 mpg, we have so much backcourt talent it really won't matter. This season is much like last season, but we should expect much more consistency and awareness of the game from the sophomores. We don't even need to talk about Yogi. If he cuts out a couple turnovers a game, and he's, IMO, the best PG in the league (homer bias).

HA HA HA--IS THIS A JOKE? The Sporting News is ridiculous!  It's always fun to kick IU when we're down--but we will rise again THIS YEAR! Tenth out of 14 teams----with two McD All- Americans in the backcourt, a soon to be first round draft pick at forward, and a ton of other solid players including shooters out the wazoo----not happening!  Keep this issue of Sporting News around for when you need a good laugh------------------ or extra toilet paper!

It just shows how CTC is perceived as a coach by the National Media. If we switch our roster with MSU they'd have both teams in the same spots they're in now.

Not the end of the world. We added guards but lost our only good big man. I can see us at that ranking if we get almost nothing from our bigs. That is such an unknown, so no one will really but into us just yet. Luckily Crean has coached. Lot of small lineups in the past, and that can be big for us.

Let's be honest---there is a log jam of closely matched teams in the Big Ten this year.  There's just no way with our talent, coaching, better strength of pre-conference schedule,  tremendous home court advantage, and ability to regularly beat higher ranked teams---that we should finish 10th this year!  And---we won't !!!!!!!!

great teams win on the road and at home...
good teams take care of their home court and pull out a few on the road...
mediocre teams only win at home...
bad teams just never win...

which will IU be this year?

Option 2.

Lindy's Bball Preview per ITH Today: IU 28th nationally and Purdue ranked worse than Penn State and Northwestern!

The Lindy’s Sports college basketball preview for the 2014-2015 season is predicting a bounce back season in Bloomington as it has the Hoosiers ranked No. 28 in its preseason top 40 and also has IU as a NCAA tournament team.

Lindy’s has Indiana as the eighth place team in its Big Ten preview, but has nine of the league’s 14 teams in its preseason top 40.

Junior point guard Yogi Ferrell is featured on a regional cover for the magazine along with Notre Dame’s Jerian Grant and Purdue’s A.J. Hammons.

Some more Big Ten and IU-centric notes from the yearbook after the jump.

· The nine Big Ten teams in the preseason top 40 are Wisconsin (2), Ohio State (14), Nebraska (19), Minnesota (21), Illinois (22), Michigan (24), Iowa (26), Indiana (28) and Michigan State (35).

· The Big Ten is rated the second best conference in the country behind the ACC.

· Troy Williams is recognized as one of the country’s 10 breakout players, a list that also includes Michigan’s Zak Irvin.

· Ferrell is ranked as the nation’s 20th best point guard, is third team All-Big Ten and is listed as the league’s “best playmaker.”

· James Blackmon Jr. is listed as the league’s best incoming shooter and also as the recruit who will “have the most impact.”

· Two of IU’s non-conference opponents are ranked in the preseason top 40: Louisville (11) and SMU (17).

· The complete predicted Big Ten order of finish: Wisconsin, Ohio State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan State, Maryland, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue and Rutgers.

28th in the country and 8th in the Big Ten doesn't sound like much of a "bounce back" season to me!

I think they are full of it and undervaluing our backcourt----you win with good guards!

One thing of note:

Wisconsin--2

OSU---------14

Nebraska---19

Minnesota--21

Illinois-------22

Michigan---24

Iowa---------26

Indiana------28

The teams are ranked so close that there is not much difference between the 3rd place team in the Big and the 8th place team (IU). By this ranking which is a prediction we could be anywhere from 3rd to 8th. They just happened to pick us 8th.

Nothing to lose sleep over!

If Hanner does avg 5 and 5, where are the other 5 and 5 coming from to match Vonleh that you conveniently forgot to mention. Didn't he go in the lottery? How about the numbers from Shehey? Do you think teams are just gonna let us shoot 3's all game long. We will be easy to prepare for. 1. Get Hanner in foul trouble. 2. Belly up the shooters esp Blackman and let Yogi and Troy shoot all day long just like last year. Will crean create a new offense or defense to match this years' team? Six years of history says no.

That would be true if we also didn't have people who like to slash it in the inside (Troy and Stan). I wouldn't categorize Troy as a 3 point shooter either. Also, Blackmon and Yogi have an ability to get into the lane, thus leaving a shooter open. While I see your point, you are conveniently painting many players far more 1-dimensional than they really are.

HMP won't be solely responsible for replacing Vonleh's impact on the stat sheet we have greatly improved guard play and 3 pt shooting. It's the same as every year, some people leave and there are others to step up and replace them. I don't know what you think I'm conveniently leaving out? If anything, Crean's fast paced offense that favors guards will work well for this roster.

Are you looking at this roster and looking at last years stats and trying to determine how we can achieve at the same level as last year? I don't understand your point.
