Walking Boot of Doom

Maryland Freshman center not enrolling

Let's see how he does once he has to follow the rules.

Not too hard to talk to kids throughout the year, when you're not a coach, but your time away is dwindling.

Rules? In the SEC? They don't heed need no stinking rules in the SEC. Heck, Pearl probably promised him all peanut butter cups he could want if he just signed with AU.

Yep--I do not want us to become UK North! Some of our fanbase would love it and overlook the dirt/filth that comes with that as long as we win!  I am somewhat old school in that I want to win the right way---with hard-working, high character kids who play as a team and a coach who believes in education, following the rules, and turning out good citizens as well as good ball players!

That's THE IU WAY!

I disagree most iu fans do want to win and want to see the game played the right way. The other stuff some may not b concerned with because its what we expect and what the coaching staff is hired to do but u have to win also if u dont have that u have nothing.

Your points are contradictory. "IU fans want to see the team win the right way but if we aren't winning nothing matters."

I said if there not winning u have nothing not nothing matters there is a difference. If we lose over half r games or more but have awsome grades and really well behaved young men off the court that is cool but crean would eventually b canned. Does this mean the school is win at all cost no but they expect both to b at a high level. This team isnt squeaky clean anyhow some may say its just drinking but everybody views things differently so in a way some could argue crean would b uk of the north if he could just win while doing it

I hardly think that a few kids busted for drinking and us winning would make us "the UK of the North"

I agree but were not winning yet so we dont know what he would tolerate. I also wonder how many of there top recruits over the last five years crean would have told that there not welcome here because we hold ourselves to a higher standard than uk so hit the road

In UK's defense, their players have had little to no issues with the law recently. I believe the "UK North" comment is more applicable in the context of completing degrees. IU has a strong foundation, both historical and recent, of academic excellence to uphold. Using the UK method, which has produced winning basketball, would ruin that foundation. Obviously Crean doesn't tell top, potential one year, talent not to come to IU, I just don't think his recruiting strategy is comparable to Cal's. Crean prefers to have a team of very good multi-year players, with one or two one-and-done's instead of an entire team of them. The difference in opinion as to what is the right way is the main difference between IU and UK.

I agree. It also doesn't mean they only cares about the NBA, or that they're selfish, etc., etc. Are some? Yes. So are some lower ranked recruits. It's about the kids character and priorities.

I also don't get that anytime fans say we want good recruits, it means we want to be the "UK of the North". You can recruit high-level players and not have all of them be 1 and done, and not have all of them be solely focused on the NBA.

At IU, I think we should typically have at least 1 5* and 2 4*'s in every class (assuming a minimum 3-player class), that doesn't mean I want to be "UK North". Cody Zeller was a 5* that stayed two years. Yogi is a 5* that is about to be a junior. Christian Watford was a 4* that stayed 4 years. Hulls was a 4* by some services. Troy Williams and Stan Robinson are both multiple year players, and there's a good chance JBJ and Robert Johnson will be too.

I just want more of those guys on the roster and less of the unranked guys.

I have always wondered why people assume that a top tiered recruit is automatically a poor student.

I agree with most of your points Jurkin---but at UK from what I am told by people that go there is that the basketball team doesn't get in trouble with the law---- because the basketball program is the law!!!

I agree we do sometimes make the mistake of lumping all of their players together---they have their share of high character kids too-but I argue their overall culture and type of program is not something we want to duplicate at IU!

If I wanted to watch an NBA training team--I'd go watch UK or an NBA  D-league team.

Instead--- I want to watch real COLLEGE basketball--so I choose IU!

Hoosier Aloha with the post of the night! It does seem like the motto of many schools--don't get caught! I am amazed at how harshly the NCAA deals with a school like IU that tries to do things the right way and self reports--- or even gets advance permission from the NCAA on an issue only to have the NCAA change its mind later.  Contrast that with schools that violate rules and never self report but never get in trouble.

Doesn't the NCAA realize they are punishing the schools being honest and causing schools to not want to self report because you're unlikely to get punished if you don't and more likely to get punished if you do.    :banghead:

On a related note-----I heard the S.E.C. is looking at some potential changes for basketball season if the depth and quality of its basketball teams do not improve soon. They will keep the name of the conference S.E.C. during football season but then change it to S.U.C. when basketball season starts!   ;)

And---UK has been advising the other SEC teams how to improve their recruiting to get more wins. UK has advised them to change their basketball philosophy from:

If at first you don't succeed, try and try again------to

If at first you don't succeed, buy and buy again!
