Interesting CTC Tweet

Recommended Posts

He's sending the right message, but in the wrong way, if these all are directed at his players. That's just my opinion, though.

And of course, he could've tried other ways to get through to whoever these are directed at and nothing else worked

Here's another tweet from him along the same lines promoting team unity and collective responsibility. I care more about what's actually going on in practice though. Words are wind, and tweets mean even less.

@TomCrean: Players that let teammates slide, coast or cut corners are just as responsible for failure and losing as the they are. STAND UP for SUCCESS!

Sent from my place of advanced, analytical thinking: the toilet.

He's talked about this in several press conferences in the past months of this offseason.  I think it's just some accountability motivation stuff that he's been pushing a lot.  Again though, definitely the right message, but twitter?  eh, don't really care.

I'm not sure if he even does most of his own tweets, thought I heard before that there are marketing people who keep tabs on the major coaches/staff's social media and edit or generate new content.

Zero issue with CTC tweeting these comments. Middle of July is probably when most lose their motivation to get better every hour.

We never had to worry about it with Jordy/Vic/Cody.....judging by the activity of some of our players it seems calling them out publicly (or at the very least on social media) is the equivalent of a benching in 1988. Just the way it is guys.

What's the difference between sitting a player due to lack of effort vs calling him out over social media? The twitter route is more anonymous but either way, you get the gist that the coach isn't pleased. And that's assuming his tweet is even aimed at anyone.
Crean is what he is. A socially awkward person who struggles to express his thoughts in a way that doesn't embarrass someone or piss them off.

Jim Irsay and Tom Crean are two people that I wish never had access to Twitter.
I hear this then hear kids each year comment on how well he connects with them. Just the other day I read where Spaulding said Crean was like one of his best friends.

Not trying to start a flame war, I understand the point of his tweet and the solid logic behind it, just kind of hypocritical coming from the coach that takes no blame right? Practice what you preach coach.

PS: sorry in advance Mods... Delete if this thread gets too bad!

You're pushing on getting a warning point, bub.

I'm actually pleased that he utilizes social media. He is obviously getting the attention that he wants....especially, if us old farts are discussing it in forums.....I also like that it gives insight on to what is going on in practice...that is...if this is indeed what is going on.

All I can say is I hope this team is working HARD and getting some good chemistry flowing during this summer.  This tweet definitely makes me raise an eyebrow a bit.  Not so much at Crean although I can see where OP is going there but I want badly to see these kids come together as a much more cohesive roster in 14-15.

Summer school at IU was absolutely the best. Small college feel with access to all the hot greek girls that were mostly unattainable during the regular school year. Smaller classes with shorter duration although meeting daily and longer class periods. Probably my most favorate times at IU although I worked 35 hours per week. Back on track...I just personally feel this hard core motivational tweets reek of desperation and concern as well as lacking self confidence. This time of year yes the athletes need to work hard on their games as well as hard as being a student and all that it entails. Todays athletes just don't go for some maniacal coach basically calling them out in a public forum such as twitter, and I think that's what he's doing. Summer is for recharging and being a college student combined with some summer league ball and mostly working on your weaknesses. You start ramping up in fall and build momentum thru the season to hopefully peak in March. Coach needs to back off and take a chill pill.

Could this have been a case of when the coaches are away the mice will play? The coaches were on the road and might have received information some players were slacking and not putting their best foot forward. It has been mentioned before, this team lacks a true leader which can get the team pulling in the same direction and at times walking the straight line. Not a big fan of TC going all tweeter gaga, but maybe it was the only avenue in order to get the message across? I imagine the players follow his tweets. Personally, I would have just picked up the telephone and called some people and kept it between me and the team.

Crean essentially said the same thing publicly last month at the Huber Winery "on the road" tour stop...

“Our guys last year spent too much time being buddies, than being absolute comrades,” Crean explained. “Comrades and even friends, they don’t let you make mistakes. It is not just what goes on, on the floor, it is what it is off the floor. Buddies are afraid sometimes of telling each other what needs to be done and we have to outgrow that (and Yogi is a key component of that).”

My guess is that he's been pushing this sort of mentality for awhile now.

@Camp Crean, it's nothing wrong with having a good time when you have a weekend off. You work hard all week, make great grades in class, bust your butt at practice and at work outs and strengthening, and I personal see nothing wrong with letting off a little steam when the coach says "YOU DESERVE A BREAK" and gives them 3 days off. Remember they are 19, 20 & 21. They are not 48, 49 & 50 like some of us and would want to sleep the next 3 days. My goodness is all some of y'all do is follow these "young men" to say negative things? Then after "some of you" say these things you want them to go out and go hard so you can say "good job" wow, I got it now. Don't have fun WORK WORK WORK!! Study hard, play harder and don't have a good time at NO TIME! Just my opinion, and I can be wrong
