Holding at ZERO total career turnovers.

I'm not complaining at all....if you look back in this thread you can see I've been a fan of his addition since it happened....but isn't an airball that lands out of bounds a turnover?

Nope.

Watching the highlight tapes, I'm extremely impressed with Nicky Z. Guy isn't just shooting the lights out, around a 90%+ eFG% from 3, he's making the smart pass, getting open for an outlet pass, getting deflections and steals. He's doing it all. Still too soon to say, but this could be a key to our success. I was supportive of the decision to bring him on, but even I have to admit I'm shocked.

How is it not the same as just throwing the ball out of bounds?

Because its a shot attempt. That is like saying getting your shot blocked is a turnover. It isn't. Just another embarrassing way to miss a shot.

Another comparison would to be if the shot hit the rim really hard and went out of bounds. The result is the same, but you had the shot attempt.

I'm sorry, I just can't wrap my head around this.  A turnover is never intended.  If a player makes a pass to another player who cuts suddenly, the ball goes out of bounds as a turnover.  The player's intent was to make a pass, but due to an error, it went out of bounds.  Same with a poor shot.  This makes no sense to me.  If an error causes you to throw the ball out of bounds, it should be counted as a turnover imo.

Those are the rules though.

So if a player misses a shot and it bounces of the rim over the backboard out of bounds, you think that should be a turnover? It's essentially the same thing as an airball.

Under that theory every missed shot, whether it's an airball, caroms out of bounds, or simply gets rebounded by the defense would be a turnover.

For purposes other than speaking to turnovers...   A player taking a shot for the basket changes lots of things and it has to be it's own separate event in relation to passing, dribbling, or whatever else.    For example, a player getting fouled while taking a shot has a totally different outcome than if fouled otherwise.  Also if a shot misses and a defensive player grabs it before going out of bounds, that would qualify as a rebound, whereas, if a pass was missed and a defensive player grabs the ball, that would definitely not be considered a rebound.

Intending to make a shot changes everything on the floor for both the players and refs, it can't be the same as other parts of gameplay.

I think when you throw the ball out of bounds without it touching anything else, it should be a turnover.

I see what you're saying, and it makes sense.  But so many other things can happen other than it just going out of bounds without anyone touching the ball.  It has to be determined if it was a shot or not.     for purposes of foul calls, shot clock, stat counting, etc.
