Kj's replacement

Recommended Posts

It just seems like we are surrounded by stronger programs and its frustrating. As far as the east coast kids that KJ brought in, the fruit that they brought was a 17-15 season and a one and done who recruited negatively against his University.

If you think that an Assistant Coach determined who we were as a bball team last year, you're way out of touch here. We landed great recruits who were freshman playing in a league dominated by upperclassmen. Troy, Stan, and Noah were the only reason outside of Yogi we were above .500. I really really love this old fashioned "we have to get Indiana kids" sentiment that some people in our fanbase scream about until they go hoarse. This isn't your daddy's game anymore. This isn't even the same game as it was 10 years ago. With AAU and national recruiting, it matters very little to most 4 and 5 stars where the hell they go. They don't have allegiances to schools, only coaches. The days of old Jimmy Lipper from Bluffton with his high and tight haircut and high tops playing in a cornfield are gone. If I have said it once on this board I've said it 1,000 times, kids in Indiana do not care about tradition. If you gave a questionnaire to every 5 star recruit in Indiana and the only question was "name 5 IU basketball players prior to 2003" I promise 99% would maybe guess three. We hold on to these traditions, as we should. These kids don't care. If some kid from Boston or Texas or Maryland wants to win a championship at my school, then he's a Hoosier in my book.

Sorry I am a little behind but what did Noah say that is being considered negative recruiting/Who did he say it to?

Rumors came out that potential targets like Lee were reaching out to him and he was saying he didn't like it here. No real basis behind it but we have whiffed on every transfer/recruit this summer. So that really fueled the fire.

additional rumors came out that he and his friendship with Goodluck persuaded him against IU.

The thing that wasn't a rumor, was an article/interview, postseason for the draft with his AAU coach and Vonleh. I am paraphrasing here, but he said he thought he could have done more. He said more or less that he had more to offer than was being utilized. Granted, any kid going on to the NBA from a 17-15 season and 11 PPG is going to say that, but nonetheless he has made these statements publicly. The other stuff is rumored.

I don't blame the kid either. I am still a fan of his. I think we should have given him more creative license. What did we have to lose?

I have reluctantly come to agree with CampCrean on the subject of tradition and what it means to today's in-state recruits ( basically nothing ). We need to have a national recruiting strategy. If this new assistant can help us get kids from the Northeast, I'm totally on board.

Still, I miss old Jimmy Lipper from Bluffton. I'm sorry he's gone.

I'm glad I got to watch the Indiana teams that had multiple "Mr. Basketball" players on the court. Back in the day, Indiana could showcase the best in-state talent. That day has come and gone. National recruitment is the best strategy. Get on board or get left behind.

Shake Milton is looking real good, and now in the espn100. I believe that IU had offered him before he made that jump to #67 in the 100 too. So, I hope that helps our cause some as well. seems like a nice kid and would be real excited if Chuck can build a relationship.

I hate it when people put all recruits into the same category with things like "none of them care about tradition" or "they all want immediate playing time" or whatever. Not all recruits are the same. Some value different things than others, but none of them all agree on anything.

Not a slam on anybody in particular, just ranting on a pet peeve. Some do care about tradition.

Hell, a significant portion of the time "your daddy's game" wasn't even what it is remembered/portrayed to be.

Is the Martin hiring official??? It looks like Seltzer will be out of a job soon, so he seems like a viable candidate if the Martin reports are untrue. Also, Crean refused to comment about that at his appearance at Huber's, so there's that too... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Bennie Seltzer is a good man. If that were so, that would be just fine and dandy by me.

Furthermore, I find it curious that a day or two after the Martin news was widely reported, nothing has been officially released, and CTC now refuses to comment.

If there is still no press release tomorrow morning, I would NOT be surprised to see Coach Seltzer return.

Why was coach Seltzer let go? Wasn't he only there for two years?

Sent from my sarcastic iPhone using BrownBanners
I saw a tweet that he had 14 transfers in those 2 years. I have no idea if that was a driver, but it could have been part of it.

Crean probably can't comment on it because no contract has been signed or it's pending a background check (ala Steve Masiello) or something like that.

Who knows what source gave CBS this info to begin with, but they weren't really clear about what stage of the hiring process they were at. Just said that they expected Indiana to hire him.
