I could try to come up with every excuse why we lost but in reality we just didn't want it as bad as they did.

No, I think its a fundamental problem. Kids need to learn fundamentals and less focus on circus shots.

Just ask Tim Duncan. Dude is as fundamentally sound of a basketball player there has been in a while, but no one talks about him as a top 15 player, even though he definitely should be in the talk.
