I guess the better way I would put it is I see him as one of the 8-10 best players to every play the game, yet you rarely ever hear his name in that conversation. And a lot of the time he is even overlooked in the top 15.

Ditto. Cus you can never have an off night on the defensive end unless you just don't try or hustle. Great offenses can hit the wall, great defenses rarely do.

Just the eye test, no stats to back it up, but it seems like free throw % has been on a decline for many years.   

 

It seems like it to me too. But, it actually appears to have remained steady for the last decade. D1 team average this year is 69.8%. In 2003, it was 69.5%. It's been in that range in the intervening years. I can't find anything that has the percentage for years before 2003.
