  1. 1. How long does Tom Crean stay at IU?

Recommended Posts

The biggest thing the IUBB program needs right now is mega stability.  The biggest thing IU fans need right now is just what was mentioned above.  A buttload of patience.  Trust me, 6 years in, we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of patience.  I'd just about be willing to bet my next paycheck that, while on the surface, this program looks like it is back, there's still a lot of stuff that still is being ironed out and rebuilt.

Throw what you think of Crean out the door for a moment.  Don't even factor that in.  There is no disputing the fact that this coach has been EXACTLY what IU has needed with regard to rebuilding.  None of us here know exactly where the program is right now.  We only know what we see, and what it appears to be.  Now, you can take that and choose to run with it and say it's back, but I'm not so sure of that position.  I think CTC is still rebuilding relationships as it pertains to recruiting that were shattered over the last dozen or so years.  I think CTC, while he has a very solid foundation laid that was visibly apparent when he made the decision to gut the program the rest of the way and start from scratch, is still fine tuning the culture, the operations, the people he recruits, and even the staff he employs.  I just honestly believe that what we see isn't what it is.  That's where my call for extended patience comes in.

I know folks will disagree with what I've said, but I think that to get to where we all want to be, the last thing we need is more turbulence in the program.  We need that extended period of stability, and allow the remainder of this rebuild that we aren't seeing to play out.

We have already been more patient with Crean than any other coach in the program's history. How much patience are we supposed to have? What makes him so special we should be more patient with him?

To be fair this is really only creans 3rd real team here. I know the rebuild years count but he's had 3 competitive teams. I don't think crean is the guy for IU and he hasn't shown me anything that he is coaching wise but he probably deserves another year.

Ironic sentiment given your site's name.

Some of us do want to get back to national contender status and are not willing to settle for less.

Yeah, if that's the reasoning then might as well give Crean a lifetime contract and say there is no interest in success.

Unless Fred Glass takes into consideration, much less reads, what is put on this and other IU forums, it looks like there will be a lot of unhappy Hoosier fans for the forseeable future, because he isn't going anywhere. Regardless of his (poor) halfcourt offense, iffy (often total lack of) in-game adjustments, and affinity for clapping, it simply isn't going to happen very soon.

The fan rumblings start and are often representative of the alumni rumblings. Here it is a mixed bag. Seems most who are dissatisfied are not expecting him to be fired this year. This is the precursor and can be forgotten about if he can get us back into a place where we are competing each year for the BT crown (do that and we are likely national contenders often too).

We underperformed this year. In the NCAA and BT tourneys last year. No room to underperform next year. That is what these rumblings really mean. Sure some are freaking out and expect a change but most are simply looking for the seat warming switch.

I think he'll get three years: this year, next year, and the year after. If we have Indiana seasons that resemble much of what I've grown up with, then he'll be gone. If we succeed and win some, he'll stay unless we never make it past the second round or something.

This is an endless debate that there isn't one solid good answer to. There's positives with Crean. There's negatives with Crean. Those negatives might sink him though.

If it weren't for Cody Zeller and Yogi Ferrell, he completely misses on two recruiting classes and I think that's led to this season - mediocre play and coaching. Time will tell how good these freshmen and the 2014 class will be and I hope they're freaking amazing. And for his sake, he better hope they're freaking amazing.

Crean will stay in good graces for a long time with tons of people because he brought the program back. He'll also never be in good graces with a ton people until he hangs a national championship banner.

As for me, next year is make or break regarding my feelings for him.

Like I said, you're free to disagree.  This is my take on things.  Not looking to argue, in fact, I won't do it.  I've read your opinion, you've freely stated it, now I've stated mine.  My contention is... well, I've already said my contention.  If you can't see what I'm saying through what I just wrote, there's no sense writing it again.

I'm not saying I don't want to get there. What I'm saying is it's going to take time. Like 5-10 years

Wow, way to engage someone by saying that because someone differs on an opinion of yours that they don't want to get back to national contender status, or that they are settling for less?  Gee, I really didn't realize we have to have preprogrammed brains that tell us all to march in lock step and talk, think, and act alike.  Might want to rethink your logic there.  Some of us are simply looking at this thing a little more broadly, and are willing to be more patient.  That does not equate to anyone here not wanting the exact things you (or any other dissenter, for that matter) want.  You want to voice your opposition to the state of the program, those on the opposing side are just as entitled to voice their support for it.  Cuts both ways, friend.

Yes I agree with this because I no longer think IU is as elite as many believe. I don't see the hurry. Crean isn't our guy so I'm still waiting to see him prove me wrong. But winning right away just isn't going to happen.

5-10 MORE years. And I'm not saying it has to be Crean at the helm, just don't think we'll be contenders on a yearly basis until then if at all

Did I say he couldn't speak his mind? Overreact to disagreement much, friend? You really read a lot into that. Are you sure you don't want everyone to have a preprogrammed brain that agrees with you, friend?

OK. If that's the case, then Crean is not the guy. That would be longer than any other great coach has ever taken. If you believe that, I'd say why not look for someone else now? Seriously, if it takes Crean that long, he'll never get the job done. Look at history and how quickly the great ones have done it.

My issue is I don't think it should take that long for us to get back there. I get that it is a process and everything, but it feels like IU shouldn't have to wait until a coaches 11-16th years in coaching to become national title contenders on a regular basis. I hope my expectations aren't too high for what is expected by the higher ups in the Athletic Department.

Do you consider Boeheim a great coach?

Would anyone agree that crean is similar to mike d'antoni of the lakers as a coach? Even his coaching principles.

Nah, I think he has the personality of his brother-in-laws, because he has heard how competitive they are.  You always hear how much he is telling everyone to compete, compete, compete…  Then, I think he tries to coach so much like Izzo, but he just doesn't see the game as well as Izzo.  IMO.  He was a great recruiter under Izzo.  He got Izzo the talent to win that title.  Izzo has said that much.  I just think he is better served for game plans, not in game coaching.  I would love for his assistants to have a major role in that, and him have the final say.  We always hear about this crazy complex offensive book.  I would love for him to break it down to five to ten top plays, and just run the damn things.  You draw up crazy plays at the end of halves/games.  The 40 minutes in between, you run your best plays.  Right now, he is shooting himself in the foot more than not.

I must admit, when I started the poll I expected something pretty close to this.  Glad to see some numbers put with expectations.  We will just have to see where we head from here.  Next year is a huge year for Crean.  I think it is his make or break year.  He will either get more rope, or tighten it up.

I'm not saying it will take Crean 5-10 more years. It will take IU regardless of coach 5-10 more years to be considered elite. That's how long and many seasons we'd have to perform at a high level. Atleast 6/10 years to be in the same class as the other blue bloods. Wasn't a coaching comment, was a comment about Indiana basketball.
