Thoughts on Crowd Booing CTC/ Players?

Recommended Posts

I guess I have mixed feelings. One quick look at a fan website can tell anyone, there is frustration with the substitution patterns. It's an issue that has been building in the collective mindset of the fan base for a few years. That frustration boiled over on Sunday during, what many of us, felt was a must-win game. Some of us chose to say, out loud, what was on nearly everyone's mind. Myself, I was somewhat awestruck by it. I did not think to see such a reaction from what I always believed were the most thick or thin, hell or high water, fans I have ever known. I did not like it. No, let's say, I did not like that I felt it needed to be done. I felt bad for those players who were on the court at the time, and hope they did not take it personal, though I don't believe Howard, Marlin or Davis saw the court again. In the end, we call them substitution patterns, and that's exactly what they are. I think CTC subs starters at pre-planned times for set amounts and got caught in a pattern where that lineup happened to get stuck together, asked to hold serve, and couldn't. CTC called time, and adjusted. Whether or not the crowd reaction influenced a coaching decision, is something I don't even want to think about. Good God no.

While the booing was obviously at coach (the Zak Irvin theory makes since up above, too though), I can see how that would probably knock the ego of the guys on the floor, and we all know those guys need some confidence. Booing coach or not, the fans were indirectly booing the players in a way.

That being said, I'm wondering if the guys on the court were wondering what in the name of Branch McCracken Crean was thinking. That lineup very well might have been booing inside just as much as the fans were. The lineup was THAT confusing.
Absolutely childish and shows no class! I understand that if you were the coach we would go 40-0 and have 10 AA on the team. I wish our fans, and fans of college sports in general, would understand why they root for their teams and not cross that line. Why did coach have that strange lineup on the floor today? I have no idea, maybe he was sending a message to certain players. Maybe he thought Perea was Vonleh and Marlin was Hulls. I love college sports because I look at the entire picture of the STUDENT-athletes and love to see them develop as young adults as much as I do athletes. This season has been absolutely bananas but I think the team will reap the rewards of hard work and dedication to their teammates and coaches. Don't get me wrong, I think we should put the best 5 on the floor that gives a chance to win but booing your own team for putting those 5 players on the court? Get a life!
I had a long response typed out until the app crashed on me. Long story short this post bugs me. The lets be happy and not hurt a couple players feelings is the exact reason we won't be hanging a banner anytime soon. If booing a boneheaded coaching move is all the things you said and the players get their feelings hurt then they really shouldn't be on the floor. Until this happy go lucky coach is a nice guy and let's not hurt the players feelings attitude is gone banner 6 won't be coming. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Crean has to understand that he has worn out his stay in Bloomington.

Of course, because you say so, it has to be so. Dumbest statement of the day. Congratulations. I don't know what the rest of Hoosier Nation would do without your absolute command of the basketball program. Now, please tell me, why is it that you are not the athletic director or president of the university again? I must've missed that when you boldly told us.

While unusual, I thought it was appropriate. This was momentary, caught the staff's attention, the line-up that had surrendered a 6 pt run was broken up and the crowd returned to it's rowdy cheering mentality even bringing out Speedo-Dude to distract FT shooters late in the game.

this dude?

I think Crean needs to hear some criticism for some of the things that he has done during his stay here.

He needs to understand that this isn't hockey, you don't have to take everyone out at the same time. I understand giving people breathers, but he could be a little methodical about his subbing pattern. Too many times I have said, "why did he take him out? he is the only one doing anything?"

As to the players, if I was them, I would understand the crowds frustration. Im guessing that the lineup out there looked pretty similar to the practice squad. I think that the players that were out there (Marlin, Etherington, Howard, HMP) add there own way of contributing, but when you put a bunch of hustle guys with out any really play makers you are basically cancelling out any potentially positive effect that those hustle players might bring.

Also I am not a hockey fan, so that comment was based on the smallest amount of hockey knowledge.

In some ways Crean reminds me of Knight. Knight would have a really good top ten team every 3 or 4 years that was a real threat to go deep in the tournament. Then top players graduated and it was a gradual rebuilding process to get back to where they were. This seems to be Crean's tactic also. I long for a perennial top ten program like a Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Syracuse, etc. I guess we won't see that anytime soon.

I thought the subbing was a lot better Sunday, and see the result. If we EVER have Martin, Etherington, Howard on the floor at the same time WE WILL LOSE

Found this breakdown out there. Shows how CTC ended up with the fated lineup and maybe why.

At 13:04, HMP replaced Vonleh. IU had the ball under the offensive basket. The score was IU 10, Michigan 7. On the in bound, at 12:58, Williams promptly traveled. Michigan missed a three and the rebound went off a Wolverine player. The clock was at 12:39.

Etherington came in for Williams. Sheehey took a quick three (9 seconds into the shot clock) and missed. He then fouled on the rebound of Staukas missed jumper and, at 12:18, Howard replaced him in the lineup and Marlin entered the game for Yogi.

At this point the lineup was Marlin, Etherington, Robinson, HMP, and Howard. It's hard to get an uglier lineup than that. The score was still 10-7.

Stauskas then missed a three and HMP rebounded for IU. On offense, Stan missed a wide open HMP on the pick and roll. HMP eventually got the ball and passed to Etherington cutting to basket on the weakside near the baseline. Etherington caught the ball, jumped, and tried to pass it back out to the wing, but it grazed the bottom part of the backboard and Michigan recovered it and LeVert dunked it on the fast break at 11:29. 10-9, IU.

At 11:07, HMP went baseline and missed a shot. He was actually near the baseline and under the backboard, but he was still able to reach out put the ball up for a layup. He just left it a bit too short, Michigan rebound, and Irvin hit a two at 10:59. So, at this point, 1:38 has run off the clock since HMP replaced Vonleh and Michigan has outscored IU 4-0.

At 10:47, Crean sends Ferrell to the scorer's table to check in. Robinson brings the ball up court and mostly stands and dribbles until there's 9 seconds left on the shot clock. He passes to Marlin, who shoots a running one-hander outside the lane and floating baseline. It misses, but Etherington rebounds and then misses a point blank put-back. Michigan gets out on the break. IU has four guys back with Robinson the deepest, but he lets Irvin sneak behind him, receive a pass and make a layup. At 10:08, Crean calls a timeout.

____________________________________

I can understand resting NV and Sheehey caught a 2nd foul so I get that. I presume Williams sat due to the turnover but how in the flying blue hell can we justify Marlin over Gordon for YF? No Holloway? Anyway, thought you guys would appreciate the play by play, proves it wasn't all 4 at once.

Good breakdown of the sequence of events. I don't have an issue with the first two subs, it's the 2nd to that are mind blowing. Not that those players were playing, but that you would choose to send those players in with the lineup already in the game.

His thought process might have been right for the situation, but you need to see the bigger picture on that and know those 4 should never see the court at the same time.

They all can contribute on this team, but not when they are out in that situation. They were just out in a situation to fail.

In my opinion, the crowd was right in booing Coach. It wasn't directed at the players, but for the lineup that coach put out there. I don't think a player should ever be booed, but Coach deserved it.

I was booing myself at home. It hurt IU at the time, and it could have caused the game to go the other way if Yogi wasn't red hot. Overall, the crowd was justified in booing coach.

Sent from my DROID4 using BtownBanners mobile app

I couldn't care less what anyone thinks. If the product on the court is lousy, or the coaching decisions, in my opinion, are lousy, I'm going to boo, be it at Assembly Hall or Mackey Arena. That doesn't make it classless, or tasteless. It doesn't make me less of a supporter of the team. In fact, it probably makes me more of one, as I care enough about the product and the school to call a spade a spade.

I've watched enough of Crean's teams now, to know he doesn't have what it takes to win a National Championship. Even last year's team, while everyone was saying we were going to win it all, wasn't good enough. Crean is 25% coach, 25% snake oil salesman, and 50 % cheerleader. People will, and are beginning to get tired of his "rah, rah, rah" approach to coaching, which isn't really coaching at all; It's hype, and very little else.

Recruiting is going to become more difficult, not as a result of what a recruit may or may not hear from the stands at Assembly Hall on any given game day, (you really think they haven't heard booing before?), but because they no longer believe Crean is THE coach capable of taking their game to the next level. To a recruit, the voice of the cheerleader in charge is beginning to fade and they're beginning to look at the product on the floor; just like the rest of us. Neither party likes what they see.

They're slow of foot, and slower of mind. They haven't got a clue how to set a pick, or screen, and seldom even try, (This point alone makes me wonder how in the hell Crean became a coach). They have athletes, but not great basketball players. They move around the court, but they move without any direction or purpose or plan. When time is running down on the shot clock, they settle firmly in to street ball, and hope that their athleticism bails them out, which more often than not, doesn't. In short, they're a shinier, newer version of what we saw in the 70's and 80's under Lou Henson at Illinois.

Who exactly is THE coach capable of taking their game to the next level? There's a difference in getting drafted and getting better.
