I agree. Do you know of something specifically shady that we're doing here? I assume you do if you're worried about Crean but not about Self, K, Sean Miller, Izzo or everybody else who's in on him. Or is anyone willing to take this kid desparate by definition?

You're right. That's why I'm not bothered by this one. For his other faults, Crean has clearly tried to run a clean program. I don't see him blowing up a rep he's spent close to 20 years building over 1 kid.

As long as it is within the rules, I don't care what a coach has to do to get a recruit. I don't care if it looks shady or fits within a loophole. Just DO NOT break the rules.

So if there is something Crean can do and get Thon (or any other top recruit) he needs to do it. Just don't break the rules.

I did see that comment and it hit me as a wild bit of snark from some random dude. But you know this board way better than I do and if the poster is someone I should be giving weight to, ok. That being said, if Crean was willing to go there, we would have had Trey Lyles this year, wouldn't we? It just seems pretty wildly out of character to me.

.I was going to bring up the Lyles thing but you beat me to it.My only concern is that if there's anything to the story, when peoples backs are against the wall they don't always stay true to character

I would hate that... Let's not make his guardian/coach/dad/provider/lover/helper our new assistant. That would seem to me like an infraction waiting to happen. I can't handle any more infractions.. 

Actually in the late 60's Indiana, to a degree, played this card.  Steve Downing and George McGinnis were ushered to Bloomington along with their Indianapolis Washington coach (of three years), Jerry Oliver.  Oliver would become an assistant under Lou Watson - and later an interim coach for the Hoosiers during the '69 -'70 campaign during Waton's absence, due to health issues. Oliver, was, in deed, a talented B-ball mentor, in his won right, and would, in time, become an Indiana High School Basketball Coach Hall of Famer.  Just a little IU historical footnote.

It was absolutely a wild bit of snark from a random dude (me). That does not make it any less true. Crean made a big mistake not giving Tom Lyles that job and I DO NOT LIKE TOM LYLES. Crean is desperate now. If we get Thon Maker, it will be because Crean let Ed Smith pick the next assistant coach.

 

Is this right? No. Is this what IU basketball should be about? No. Would Bo Ryan do it? Absolutely not. Crean has to do it to save his job. Crean cannot win with average talent.

This is wishful thinking, but if you're Thon Maker and you're kind of the enigma recruit of 2015 (if he reclassifies) and being compared to Durant, KG, et., do you really want to follow UK's 40-0 team? What if you lose 8-10 games get a 5-7 seed and lose in the round of 32? I know guys don't always think that way, but it's kind of like the coach replacing the legend.

 

Not trying to be facetious, but with that logic... should be rooting for UK to go 40-0 then? I honestly don't think the previous year matters thattt much. Most of these guys are just more concerned about getting ot the NBA anyways...
