What Three Things Have To Happen To Win At Syracuse?

Recommended Posts

For me, it's:

- Zone Penetration. IU is very stagnant attacking a zone, and they really lack penetration. This is the killer to any zone. Let Yogi attack, and he will find the open man.

- Making 3's. Outside shooting is a must in this game. Jeremy, Yogi, and Sheehey will be crucial in hitting shots from deep. Syracuse may sag the zone until IU is a threat from deep.

- Offensive Rebounding. Luckily, IU is one of the best, and it will be needed. With IU not being the best shooting team, they will need to grab offensive rebounds for 2nd chance points.

To me, these three things will have to happen for IU to pull out a victory against Syracuse.

I definitely agree with being able to penetrate syracuses 2-3-2 zone and outside shooting noah will have to have a great rebounding game will has to get his 3- point shooting back and yogi just has to do what yogi does best drive to the basket and pass the ball to either vonleh by the basket or to will or jeremy outside for the 3

The three things we will have to do in order to beat Syracuse will be:

One of the easiest things to do is ball reversal because it allows you to move the ball faster than the defense can react.

Another thing to beat the zone is to attack the gaps of the zone because it allows you to force multiple defenders in the zone to collapse.

And finally get the ball into the high post because getting inside the zone either forces the defense to collapse or yields a wide open jump shot.

As we should learn from last year passing the ball around the perimeter is not effective in order to beat the zone.

We need A games from everybody

starting with Yogi.  He can't try to win this game on his own and he can't turn the ball over.

We need to crash the boards hard.

Troy and Jeremy need to finish their jumpers.  So does Will.  Actually, everybody needs to hit their jumpers.  We have been talking about this all Spring, all Summer, and now all Fall.

No fancy failed tricks like those behind-the-back passes and unnecessary NBA three attempts on the road in the Challenge.

We need a huge game from Jeff Howard.   :D

1.  You have to play big and long against that zone.

2.  Get it to the middle and make them reactionary.

3.  Control the boards.  Syracuse is bigger than any team we will face this year.  We can't shoot well.  Our only chance to control the boards on both ends to make up for our 40% shooting.

Kind of surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but:

1) Defense has to be good. Outside of Shabazz Napier  we were good defensively against UCONN, and then we saw good defense again against Evansville. Along with closing out the possessions with a rebound, something we struggled with during stretches of the UCONN game.

2) Being active on the boards, mainly guys like Troy Williams, and think JH could definitely be better be more active. Vonleh will help as long as he can stay out of foul trouble, and Hanner has had his moments this year.

3) Someone to be accurate from range. Williams showed when he has good rhythm he can be a good shooter against Washington. JH needs to be on his game Tuesday shooting it, same with Yogi, Will, and Gordon.

1.  Limit turnovers - we can't be chasing them in transition D all night and giving up easy transition baskets

2.  No off nights from anyone - Noah has to be the Noah of every game but UConn, Troy has to be the Troy of the Washington game, etc.

3.  Our calling card thus far has been rebounding, and it's going to have to be again on Tuesday night.  Don't give them multiple opportunities per possession to score.  Also we need to keep getting second chance points.

That's the most insightful post I've ever seen from you, and pretty much what I would have said.

This Syracuse game is going to be a tough one for our Hoosiers, but what three things does IU need to do to be successful against Syracuse?

Duh, Jayboob. It's only one thing. We have to score at least one more point than they do! Don't tell me I'm the only person that can see that.

1) Give the ball to Noah

2) Give the ball to Noah

3) Give the ball to Noah

Where are you going to put Noah?  You really can't just feed the low post because it's too well guarded.  You could have him in the high post though, or have him on the baseline and move from side to side with ball reversal (i.e. ball goes left and he goes to left baseline or vice versa).

I'd have Will flash to the middle around the FT line and try to hit him there, it force the defense to match up and essentially be a man to man look and he's got a good mid range game.

Play good defense, force turnovers, rebound
These things can all lead us to getting down the floor quickly. If our defense leads to offense and we run like Coach wants they will not be able to set up the zone every time.
When the zone is set up we must attack the gaps and make them collapse. We should not always settle for the open 3's which I fear we will. Open jumpers from 15-18 feet should be open. No moving picks or cheap reach in fouls, we need to stay out of foul trouble. If we attack the zone, we will get to the charity stripe then we must hit the free throws.

That may be more than 3 things, but this is big boy basketball.
