Awful lot of hand wringing over what could very simply be explained by a bad portal haul. Scouting misses happen to the best of coaches. This year's roster is bad so it's gonna be a long season. Doesn't make it any better, but neither does piling on after every loss. Just gotta try again and hope the portal goes better this time. Having a full staff in place should help.

Whats one more bad season for IUBB at this point? Football is where it's at anyways. Most people ignored that sport forever at IU and eventually they got it figured out. People who don't want to watch the ups and downs should just treat IUBB like they used to treat IUFB and can tune back in if / when they start winning at the level you want again.

This is true. I would just ask that DeVries not allow the coach who scouted Bailey to ever recruit for us again….because there’s no bigger miss we’ve seen in at least a decade.

Ngl tucker is looking like an even bigger miss. Bailey is terrible and shouldn’t be a big 10 player but i think most everyone expected Tucker to be one of the better players in the big ten and he’s been awful especially getting paid what he does

Tucker has been a disappointment, no doubt…but it doesn’t take Dr. Naismith to know that Bailey is NOT a Big Ten Big, heck, many of us called it out during the offseason. Again, I don’t blame Bailey for this, I blame the coach who thought Reed could come in and win us games.

On that note, I’m not too high on Drew Adams for a lot of reasons, his role with Reed being one.  I wouldn’t mind seeing him swapped out for someone else after this year, but I don’t know if that’s in the cards.

KJ is a little iffy too in my view.

Wrong.  Just completely wrong.

Iowa won with their guards Stirtz (who was completely dominated by athletic teams like Illinois and MSU) and Jackson. In fact, we got more offensive rebounds than Iowa did (8-5). Alexis’s 8 boards was more than any of their bigs had and comically enough Baileys 2 offensive boards was more than any of their bigs had.

Otoh, Conerway and Enright were embarrassing. Both with 4 fouls. Wilkerson too. It was almost entirely scheme and basketball IQ. Iowa is thoroughly average athletically, at best.

This was a complete coaching failure on Devries part. Not the end of the world, but an abject failure. I don’t get the urge to try and obfuscate that fact.

What about Banks? Him and Manyawu kinda destroyed our 4/5s yesterday. They were a combined 11-15 from the floor. Now when a team beats you by 20 they’re gonna have lots of good stats, but interior defense is a massive failure.

Minny was 15/26 on twos against us. Iowa was 16/27 on twos. No bueno.

Agreed. I noted earlier, maybe a month ago the same very thing. I get the Indiana Elite connection, but we can find other people imo better than Adams with connections.

Tucker had him most of the game and got embarrassed. Predictably so. But banks is no uber athlete. He was pretty bad versus teams like Purdue and MSU.

As to the stats…yeah. A defense that was once pretty sound and did a yeomans job of keeping people out of the paint has absolutely regressed. Iowa was more effective inside the arc than Lville and UK. So you tell me….what’s up with that?

The talent compared to the competition is not the same.

Sisley and Conerway are the only plus athletes on the entire roster. That’s on the staff, but that almost entirely explains the problem.

Not against Iowa.   Minn?

Bad interior defense that can’t consistently overachieve? Iowa is pretty good from distance so the guards didn’t drop down to assist the bad defense bigs?

He will either fix it or he won't. If people have lost faith already, I guess they can use the board as an outlet or find a better use for their time and energy than IUBB fandom. Football has a lot to offer right now thankfully, at least.

Will he though?  That is the struggle.  The "misses" on this roster are huge.  How can you miss on so many?  Newsflash, you can't -- Something about his analysis is off.

Portal opens April 7.  He'd better start preparing now so he can hit the ground running.

A big percentage is doing exactly what you are suggesting. However this is a message board that usually includes the biggest and most devout of the fanbase. Weekly and game by game projections and assessments are what you are going to get from a message board.

The portal haul wasn’t good enough.  The majority of our posters and DeVries thought it was.  To me, that’s the biggest actual concern (DeVries).  It makes the next portal haul feel like a hope and a prayer when the guy in charge already failed once.  Doesn’t 100% mean he’ll fail again, but you lose faith in a persons abilities by watching their results.

I agree with most of this...but I really think DDV underestimated B1G play and the way it is officiated!  I'm willing to give a second off season to see if he can make adjustments/improvements before casting judgment.  Curious to see what he does without his son boat anchoring him also.

Could just be our basketball team is cursed for eternity!

I haven't paid attention to portal guys at other schools, so I'm curious as to the list of guys we should have brought in instead.  And were those guys even attainable?  We did try to get Bidunga and couldn't, but how massive of a difference would that have made?  I think a lot of the current guys would even be fine in the right role, but we needed a stud PG and PF/C to carry the load.  Instead every single player is needed to vastly exceed their expectations/abilities in order to even break even.
