So Reed Bailey averaged 19 and was all conference in the A 10 but doesn’t belong in a big ten game?

To play devils advocate, I think the concern is the physicality doesn’t allow his skills to translate. The kid from Ball State had the opposite, but similar, problem where the speed at this level was too fast.

I’ve watched Wisconsin get by with finesse bigs for years so I’m less worried. But you can imagine how teams like MSU or Rutgers might maul some weaker bigs.

I take no position in the debate though, because I’ve never seen Bailey play.

Bailey is slick on offense.  Can use both hands.  Understands slips, PNR, Cutting. Can shoot it well enough.  Defense is ultimately the question.   He did play mostly the 4 at his last stop so most thought we’d get a surefire center in the portal to compliment that but DeVries I think will go small and play him at the 5 primarily and play a lot of 5 out actions and try to make the teams with anchors at the 5 pay for it on the defense end.

Hopefully we can start getting a friendly whistle and our guards can help and dig and play physical to bog things down.

The comment saying that Bailey doesn’t belong on a big ten floor is ludicrous.   And note that he followed it up by saying that Sisley and Dorn should — an incoming freshman plus a guy who hasn’t even practiced yet for IU.

Worst case scenario:

  • Fran McCaffery's Iowa teams in one of their down years.

Best case scenario:

  • McDermott's teams at Creighton or Oats' teams at Bama.

Most likely scenario? Somewhere in-between.

Creighton under McDermont has had some good defensive teams. Oddly he kind of goes back and forth on which side is better… like CDD’s teams in terms of what is more efficient, offense or defense. So I’m not even sure what that’d mean to look like Creighton next year. It could be anything, from an analytics perspective, so long as they’re well coached.

Worst Creighton has been is 44th on D in the last 5 years, but that was last year when they were 32nd in offense and only managed a 9 seed.  In 2022 Creighton was 112 in OffE and 19 in DefE. That would completely subvert expectations if we looked like that next year.

Similarly, I doubt we look like Alabama because of tempo. Alabama hasn’t been less than 14th in AdjTempo the last 4 yrs and they were 1st last year. CDDs teams were pretty avg-ish in tempo. WVU was 331st last year. That’s UW/Virginia levels of tempo.

I really wont be surprised by anything next year, as there isn’t much of an analytic footprint to match up with the conventional wisdom on this years roster.

I subscribe to the philosophy of “you are what you can guard” so if you’re the 5 and can’t guard other team’s primary post, then it’s hard to be effective in big mins, imo.

I have watched as much of Bailey as I have Sisley and Dorn, so it’s all academic to me. I doubt (hope) CDD would recruit a guy that he didn’t think could defend his position at this level, so I’m not worried. I’m just stating that is the prevailing concern, and the reports from the single practice didn’t do anything to make that concern less of one.  I mean…it’s the preseason. I hope Bailey is the next Bill Russell and have no data points to say one way or the other.

I’m very interested in the tempo side. This team — including according to the players themselves— is built to get out and run and gun. I don’t think looking at last year’s WV team is apples to apples. I think the pace will be on the faster end - we’ll see

100%

Last year’s WV team had some fierce defenders like Sinciere Harris. Our roster projects to be a far better shooting team and far softer defensively.

I'm becoming more excited about watching this team play this season.  Sure, the roster isn't perfect, but I'm hoping we have a group of players that are more concerned about winning than showcasing their game for the NBA.  This squad seems to be deep with shooters which should cover up some of our deficiencies.  I want to see a culture and style of play established in year one.  Without seeing the team, it is hard to set a win/loss expectation.  I'm looking forward to the new roster, but I'm definitely going to miss Reneau and it will be difficult to watch him play elsewhere this year.

I want to see all 5 guys on the court working together to get the BEST shot, not running offense to showcase the offensive skills of certain players.

Play for others, make the extra pass, extra cut.

I think we'll see that.

Build from there!

I liked Malik, as well, it's too bad he didnt have a coach to hold him accountable.

I’m interested in seeing all of it. I can try and make some educated guesses on what we’ll see but I wouldn’t feel confident in any of them. There’s just not much in a consistent analytic footprint for CDD. I think I would agree with you though that we’ll be close to upper 1/3rd in tempo. Just a hunch.

I understand the analytics side of assessing things, which of course also depends on how past teams were built. Here, players when interviewed about what they discussed with DeVries and staff when being recruited specifically commented on how they’re looking to get out and run, and DeVries said the same thing in a published interview about the team. And of course we don’t have rim protecting traditional bigs, we have guys who can spread the floor and get out on the break.
I’d be really surprised if we’re not a running and gunning team

Someone would have to define what “get out and run” means in that context for it to tell us much. The tails of the distribution on tempo get kind of long due to big outliers at the top and bottom. For example, Arizona and UF were pretty fast teams ranking about 50th-ish each. But both of those teams were much closer to the Div1 average in pace than they were to #1 Alabama. Similarly slow 300th-ish teams like Purdue and UCLA were much closer to average than they were to last placed Drake.

So will we look like Alabama? I doubt it.

Could we average a couple more possessions than the Div 1 avg, pushing us well into the top 100 in pace and play at a speed closer to Arizona/Maryland/UF? Sure. And that would constitute a fairly big departure from CDD’s previous teams.

We added 2 new walk ons for this years roster, this is taken from inside the hall.

Even the walk-ons were good 3-point shooters in HS.
