A confession:

I see a lot of posts comparing and contrasting shoe companies and …

I just don’t care.

The different shoe company products have no impact on performance, every company makes a ton of shoes and gear in every style imaginable, and every company’s gear is probably made at the same factory anyway. I like quality clothing and see the difference between black leather Italian dress shoes and vinyl ones from Payless, but see no functional or style difference between Nike and Adidas.Maybe I’m in the minority.

So… why should I care?

There are differences... When it comes to the business for schools. For whatever reason, Nike schools dominate. Is it the shoes and gear or just a coincidence? I don't know. As for us peasant civilians? It really doesn't matter. I went and bought two pairs of Adidas for $72 at an outlet mall in Myrtle Beach. A pair of Donanavn Mitchell's and some running shoes. bought my son a pair of basketball shoes and daughter some shoes. But everything was 50-60% off.

“For whatever reason?”

That’s not very convincing! Doesn’t make me care any either.

Here’s the difference…

KU Adidas deal = $14MM in cash and gear a year, plus $500k to academics. It also happened during the heat of the Federal case, where to save face KU actually had the gall to sue Adidas and hang their legal defense on the Adidas claiming by paying players to go to KU, it compromised  the university’s integrity. lol!! Balls!!

https://chancellor.ku.edu/news/article/2019/04/24/ku-announces-14-year-agreement-adidas#:~:text=Today we are pleased to,apparel partnerships in college athletics.

5 yrs later, IU accepts $5.4MM a year…all gear…because ‘with NIL the landscape is changing’. Same deal it got in 2014!!

Seems we’re not quite tier 1 w/triple stripe. I would argue  lower Dolson at least a full letter grade in the other forum…if not more.

We could’ve gotten more from Russell Athletic FFS!!

Interesting!

Have these deals permanently gone to shite for all schools moving forward?

Not sure…not that I’ve seen, but probably a lot of them still waiting to re-up. But, how insulting that KU’s value is 3x to Adidas than IU’s. No wonder Gassnola wasn’t sending any guys our way…except in 11th hour deals. Louisville’s terms, when they had Pitino, were even more egregious.

if were the preeminent soccer program, and they’re the preeminent soccer gear brand…then it sure seems like we just said ok.

maybe we’d of been better off getting online at Nike

So other than $$ to the university, is there any reason I should care?

Cash to the Uni is critical to  athletic success..in the past, right now,   and well into future. It pays for coaches, assistants, soon to be players (direct from Uni w/pending NCAA settlement) and EVERYTHING else needed to be competitive. A dollar in is one less needed…so boosts NiL and everything  else. If you care to be competitive…you’ve got to care about the $$…like it or not.

on the brands themselves…who cares, but Nike is generally cooler than adidas w/kids…but they won’t really care if their getting a better deal. Generally viewed in US as more innovative design and technology than Adidas

With all the money from BTN, Fox, CBS, etc., a $5 million difference between Nike and Adidas is peanuts. Has minimal impact on the athletic budget

I promise you, $10MM (difference between what adidas is giving KU v. IU) a year makes a BIG difference whether it be basketball or football!

Nike has been and will remain the leader in footwear/apparel for sports and athletes for the forseeable future.  Yes, Adidas and UA each has their fair share as due Puma, Rebook, etc.

Nike(Jordan brand) shells out much more money than any of the other companies when it comes to both sports and advertising.  Nike just reupped their contract with the NBA and WBNA for the next 12 years.  Add in Nike gets the most dominant guys and women 9 out of 10 times after college is dominant to me.  They too have their hand in getting NIL deals with the top college athletes as well.

so, if Nike offered IU say $10 mil more annually for 5 years, you are saying $50 mill more over 5 years doesn't move the needle to switch from Adidas to Nike?

I think the point is, with NIL no shoe company is offering anywhere near that kind of payout to universities anymore.

Why should Nike give a new fat contract to Duke when they can give it directly to Cooper Flagg instead? Guys like Flagg are the reason Nike is interested in Duke in the first place; his endorsement and wearing of their gear is worth more to Nike that every other Duke athlete combined.
