it was only an exhibition game BUT we came away with no injuries, we got to see a glimpse of the team together(minus Gallo and Tucker) on the road in what felt like a true in season road game and beat a ranked opponent that will be playing likely past day one and day two of March Madness.  I'd say yesterday was a success.

Maybe it’s because I watched Illinois-Ole Miss last night and Illinois is nowhere close right now, but I just finished this game and I’m really, really encouraged. The offense is gonna take some gelling time, but they created a lot of good looks, and, yeah, they’ll go in eventually, and in the meantime they have guys who can just get theirs, so I’m confident that’ll come. Rice’s decisiveness is a sight to see. I also like what looked like some stuff with Reneau facilitating in more than just strictly a high/low thing. I need to go back and look at some of that. But the defense is so far ahead of where I expected and some of the problems last year just weren’t there. Mgbako had a couple of weak moments, but his man/ball awareness and footwork were hell and gone better than last year. And with 1 exception Reneau’s hand discipline was impeccable and that’ll keep him on the floor. And no glaring fundamental problems. Weight sunk, mostly. Wasn’t crossing his feet, love it. Kid’s gonna have a big year. And you’ve got guards applying real live ball pressure. Carlyle’s offense will come, but his half court defense was really good. He’s more disciplined off ball than Galloway and he wasn’t distorting their positioning by overextending the way Gallo does. Have thought all summer it was gonna take maybe a dozen games to get a real sense of what they have here. Not thinking that so much now because this is clearly Rice’s team already and he seems to have his arms around it pretty good. We’ll see what it looks like when the other kids get back, but that was a good 1st show.

side note: Man, am I glad Okpara left OSU. That kid’s got a chance to be SEC DPOY before he gets out of Knoxville. He gave Ballo all he wanted.

Faint praise is all he's earned. Yeah, he recruited the portal well this year but his teams have underperformed each year.

From what I saw yesterday? Looks like he did his roster building job really well this time.

But I’m on record from the day I learned about him, that Myles Rice is special on the court and off. So Woody and Ya getting him to buy into coming to IU when he could have chosen almost anywhere is a coup. And only losing the guys we wanted run off to the portal was also a major feather in the staff’s cap.

So Im pretty hopeful that this roster is balanced and has what it takes, and if that’s true Woody deserves real heartfelt praise.

Beat a fringe top 10 team on the road down a couple key pieces without shooting the ball particularly well.

Yeah......it's going to be a loooooong season for some.

Goode seemed to be a Miller Kopp style smart defender. Played gaps without overplaying them . That was a pleasant surprise for me given his reputation. Cupps too.

It’s pretty easy to see a scenario arise when the roster is at full strength in which Goode’s role gets very niche-y, which is pretty amazing given that he was a 20 min rotation piece on a very good Sweet 16 team 7 months ago. I imagine he’ll find minutes because shooters always do, but there are a bunch of kids on this roster who can play and if Tucker is good enough that he forces minutes I imagine he takes most of them from Luke.

Still an exhibition at the end of the day.   These games are for both teams to try different rotations out that they might not normally play in certain situations.  IU could have lost and at the end of the day it was only an exhibition.   Barnes said at the 9 min mark he had a lineup in that he normally wouldn’t play together it wanted to try it out and let them play meaningful reps against good competition.   Pretty sure IU made a run during that time

It's pretty heartening to know that any player on the team except Myles and Oumar could miss time and there will be a ready made replacement. Can't lose your big time PG or rim protector and be nearly as good, but we could be just fine in any other scenario. And if Ballo or Rice was in foul trouble we could go stretches of being effective without them depending on the opponent.

This board would have been in midseason meltdown mode had IU lost an "exhibition" game. Don't get it twisted.

And Tenn's best stretches were when Rice or Ballo weren't on the court.

Even if we're very deep, it's hard to replicate what Rice brings offensively and what Ballo brings defensively.

So what.   How is that any different than any loss by IU on this board no matter the coach.  Part of a message board.   If you don’t melt down after a loss what’s it matter if others do

Then why try and discredit the win calling it an exhibition game lol.

Not discrediting anything just pointing out a fact that it was only an exhibition game.  What’s both teams records right now?   lol    You try to hard on here to find conflict when there isn’t any.

Because it was an exhibition game? Win or lose, it doesn't count and the coaches treat it that way. You won't see this win being considered when tournament selection comes around since it was just an exhibition game. Kind of weird and desperate to prove the doubters wrong by thumbing your chest after an exhibition win, but you do you.

I disagree that there would have been a meltdown if IU had lost this game. Maybe if they lose to Marian there would be, but not on the road at Tennessee.

I'm not trying to find any conflict lol, simply pointing out your utter hypocrisy which is typical but expected.

I know how exhibitions work, didn't exclude the board freaking out in the first half when they shot 0-11 from 3. I just know that you and your parade of losers would have extended the FMW thread 10+ pages had they lost that game Sunday.

In the eyes of the players, it wasn't just an exhibition game. Coming out of Knoxville with a W, is all they will remember. It's more of a confidence and psychological win than anything else. These guys know they can go into an away/neutral site game and compete. That's all we wanted to take away from this. Our pg definitely gives us that edge we've been waiting for.

It was more for the players confidence. So yes, the W means more than just an exhibition game to them.

I’d probably be more worried about Reneau going out in a critical stretch. Woodys offense going through the post to a guy like Ballo scares me.

Reneau at small ball center would hurt defensively but woodys scheme already collapses the guards into the post. We’d probably make up a lot of what we lose on defense by hard to stop offense with a small ball lineup and reneau in the post.

Here’s hoping we have an injury free season either way.
