Why? Woody brought in Ware and then Ballo-two of the top ranked bigs in the portal. 
 

You guys are pinning last years Devries failures on IU as a whole. Even Devries got Wilkerson to IU last year. There’s no indication top talent won’t come to Indiana for the right price or the right coach.

Good to see people are consistent.  Grasping at straws to defend the soon to be disastrous tenure of DD same way they did Davis, Crean, Archie and Woodson. 
 

Honestly I am impressed that anybody who had the guts to defend the Woodson hire as anything more than an absolute joke is still posting. 

Again, why is it a telling sign? All of his good players were out of eligibility.

Woodson's two year development of TJD was an attractive pitch to guys like Ware, Ballo, etc as were his ties and connections to the NBA.

IU nor this staff have anything like that going for them right now.

Exactly.  People forget the power of the dollar and sales. There is still a lot to sell about Indiana. About the only thing not to sell out the recent results. New stage isn’t attacked to previous failures besides 1 year.  The rest are other coaches and teams.  As fans we miss the small picture.  Woodson with money and connections had draw.  Recruiting is an art form even with money. If you can convince a group of guys what the core can be, they can make their own identity. And if the price is right, there is no limit.  Exhibit A.  BYU.

The past is the past and can't be changed so not sure why we're relitigating the WVU transfers situation. 

Anyways... Last year the transfer class was rated #10 by 247.

Per 247 transfer portal rankings, we signed: #18 overall, #45 overall, #63 overall, #102 overall, #105 overall, #112 overall, #160 overall, #198 overall, #412 overall, #505 overall

Sam Alexis was the #412 overall ranked player, Reed Bailey was the #63 overall. Enright was #198 and Conerway was almost unplayable at the end of the year ranked #105.

We obviously have the money to pay "top" players...

Do we have the chops to 1) scout them accurately 2) land them when other schools have a better pitch

Rankings mean bupkis in the grand scheme of things if we can't do #1

And we won't know the answer to #1 until we see the team on the court. Everyone can cope differently while we wait. At least until then, we all can enjoy football season

Woody got TJD to the league.  Big guys saw that and wanted to ride that coattail.  There is nothing this program has done recently that would suggest high major talent will come for money alone and if those are the players we are getting just for money then there's a possibility they will not establish the culture needed to sustain success.  Just my opinion.  Don't be disappointed with the team we assemble with higher expectations than we get.  I will be ecstatic if I'm wrong.  Wilkerson was a great get.  We got lucky there for sure.  Without him, we really struggle to win.

I really thought Sam turned into a nice player at the end.  He may not have been highly ranked, but he gave good effort and battled.  

Your post is spot on.  Hopefully with Carr we scout well and get what is needed this year.

Really nice player. Played hard and gave 100% effort. But at 6'8 230 lbs, you're going to be limited in this league unless you're a freak athlete, something Alexis was not.

Definitely.  Good bench player but not starting center 30+ mins a night.

On one hand, it’s the coach. On the other hand, it’s the program.  Kind of have to stick with one.  
 

If you’re saying Devries lack of success is holding us back, then sure…I can buy that. But right now Wilkerson is in some mock drafts going at pick 46 (nbadraft.net). Woody “got TJD to the league” via pick #57. So there’s literally nothing holding Devries back from parlaying that same player draft success into portal targets. 
 

Basically, nothing about IU’s program stopped Woody from landing big portal targets. Nothing about the program will stop Devries from doing it. He’s got the assistants and structure in place this year. Now it is time to deliver.
