From the business aspect of things, he’s fine. But he’s never been in the position to evaluate and lead a proper and thorough coaching search.

Could've just hired a qualified AD to begin with.

I’ve repeatedly said this is a group effort. Rarely is there much disagreement, and there isn’t with Woody. I guess I’m surprised that people are so surprised. The AD reports to the President, by the way.

That is not a process. “Group effort” is not a real answer and if so, it means we don’t have a process and that explains a lot regarding the level of stupidity in which governs our university.

Unless there is an established voting system, someone has to have the final say - who is that in this case?

Agreed. But that would require competency from the administration.

Yep, unless people are hired for reasons other than the qualifications for the job. Which would mean the administration is an even bigger problem than we already think.

If I recall, McRobbie hired Dolson after Glass campaigned hard for his understudy. But I could be off base there.

I'd be fine with replacing both Dolson and Woodson this year, except it's late for that. Finding a new AD then a new coach would take too long. It might be worth it if both hires are good ones. Next year will probably be terrible if Woodson is retained and possibly even if he was replaced right after the season ended.

The bolded was true when they actually did, and that time he at least made the NIT.

A few other things happened too. It wasn’t just the WL record.

Some similarities. Some big differences…

Doherty was hired, in large part because he had the endorsement of Michael Jordan. Similar to Woodson and QB.

Doherty brought in some very high end talent, Sean May, Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants. Similar to the talent Woodson brought to IU.

Doherty’s second season was 8-20. He also had players leaving mid season. He had an on court screaming match with a Duke assistant coach and called Duke’s cheerleaders ugly.

Upon resigning, the AD cited that as much as not winning, the lack of quality character was as much of an issue.

As I said, similarities, but not exactly the same story

You're right some BIG differences.

NIL

Transfer Portal with immediate eligibility.

Doherty coached a #1 ranked team at UNC (first season); Woodson hasn't done it in his 3 years (to date).

Doherty UNC team spent a total of 14 weeks ranked in the AP Top 10; Woodson once.

Doherty won National Coach of the Year; Woodson  . . .

And this isn't saying Doherty is a good coach. He wasn't.

EDIT: And he was let go because the players got mad. Not because of "character".

And if they don't trust Dolson to do his job why didn't they just hire an experienced AD in the first place?

Like Fred Glass? Or Terry Clapacs? Or Clarence Doninger? That’s what I mean about not knowing what they don’t know.

Talk to the BOT.  They hired him and if their position is that it’s the ADs fault then they aren’t accepting their own responsibility.  Seems like nobody’s are pointing inward, just outward.

Just a suggestion, maybe it’s time to hire a true athletic Director, and make SD anassociate athletic Director in charge of donors.

It won’t matter if he needs permission from the elders to act.

Yes Doherty had one great season, with the previous coach’s players. And yes, his character flaws were part of what led to his firing.

You’re not getting a “qualified AD” if they need Buckner, et. al. Approval to make decisions.

The BOT hired the AD, who reports to the President?  No.

It’s a wink and a nod system. Dolson can do whatever he wants as long as “I” say ok.

Qualified ones don’t and won’t need the permission you believe Dolson must ask for.

Nah.  From the looks of things, Dolson hasn’t done anything worthy of firing.  Lets see how the Cig hire works out.

A qualified candidate would bristle at the notion, though he / she would understand the need to build a consensus around certain things like major program coaching hires and would intuitively understand why doing that is so vital.

But you yourself has said it’s a “consensus.”  That means if they don’t approve the AD, regardless of who it is, can’t make a move.  Nobody worth anything is going to take that job under those conditions.
