Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Well the other poster, with no basis whatsoever, stated that he steals large amounts of money from the elderly.

As for me? Anecdotally, I have met Coach Woodson once, in the lobby of the Union when he was walking in with Kanaan Carlyle and his mom during their official visit last April. Was with a group of four or five middle aged alumni and came up to them to wish them well. Mike Woodson could not have been more gracious and made a point of letting us speak freely to a recruit with no restrictions, and then chatted us up for a minute to point out that alums and fans are what make IU as great as it is and it's always a pleasure to have recruits unexpectedly meet people on campus.

And this was a month after the end of last season when IU fans and Coach Woodson were at their saltiest. The guy deeply loves IU; it's just that he likely isn't working out as the basketball coach.

I just can’t square his “deep love” for IU with the effort he puts into his job.

Chalk it up to 'people are often tricky, complicated, contradictory, tone-deaf, and sometimes just plain weird.'

Except for the part about him being a terrible human being, his post is 100% spot on.

Woodson has shattered whatever legacy he had. To fans under 45, we have no recollection of Mike Woodson the guy who played under Bob Knight and won a title. So he was only a "former great player" to me.

Now, to me and an entire generation of IU fans, it's no longer "former IU great Mike Woodson". Instead it's "the guy in way over his head".

I suppose I can't speak for everyone though, only myself.

Anyone under 50 really . There may be a few older fans who still cherish Woodson the player but they are probably in their 70's. I'm old enough to remember the old on court camera angle, which was really cool. But I'm not old enough to remember the king.

This is most likely true being close to the situation. IU got Trent and it wasn’t because Woodson. I firmly believe if Woodson leaves Trent still comes.

Thanks for weighing in Dillion.

Not surprised to read this, but good to see you saying it.

Woodson didn't win a title as a player except for the NIT in 1979. In 1980 was the year his legacy was really built. He missed a lot of the season after a back surgery but came back and led IU to a conference title and being the BTPOY

I agree 100% with both of these posts.

I don't doubt that in Mike Woodson's mind, he "loves" IU and thinks he is doing his part/is the guy for the job.

It is apparent to everyone else though, that's not the case. Over the years he has demonstrated several curious pathologies.

Despicable human? I don't care for the guy - bad bball coach - but that seems like a phrase reserved for the worst of the worst. Stealing from the elderly? Laugh out loud mischaracterization, though if I squint really hard, I get the sentiment. Personally? I think he'd be a very interesting case study for some therapists lol.

You would have been like 10 so maybe you do. 50 year olds would have been 6 his last season. I doubt they would remember him.

Lol calling woodson a despicable human being is definitely a bit far but it's far less offensive than some of the stuff posters have said about malik imo. It's possible woodson is with how freaking arrogant he is! It's also possible he is a very nice person! I have a feeling nobody on here genuinely knows him that close to know his true nature. However being an absolute terrible coach at iu and then having the balls to say you done your job and certain fans aren't true fans shines a bad light. Should have taken full responsibility and said we will get better because this is unacceptable but no. Maybe someone can take a deep dive into what charity he is involved in lol

I don't think he has a a good college basketball coach but that doesn't make him a bad person. I couldn't care less what he said on senior Day last year about true fans. I am one of those fans he was talking about since I emailed Dolson a few times. I just think some take all of this to seriously or personally when it isn't warranted.

Yes my post was mostly joking. Sorry I didn't get that fully across. Non of us know him well enough to come to that conclusion. I would say the chances are pretty high he is a ok person.

I have a background that attaches criminal culpability to words like "stealing," so that type of language tends to get me barking back.

Appreciate the kind words and you are more than welcome to post your unrestrained opinions! ...but I'm allowed to bark back  :)

I will reel it in a bit!  I still don’t like him as a person though

I’m 61, I remember him playing, he was good, had heart, played hard!   Doesn’t do his job hard and with heart

Oh for sure - those under the age of 40 are now in danger of most likely remembering him as a failed coach at IU, albeit one who had a reputation as a great player at IU.

The parts of the posts that I took exception to were "despicable human being" that "steals a large amount of money from elderly people."

That's an awful, ridiculous thing to say.

By the way Stuhoo, I still feel that way!  And as the ederly comment, it was a metaphor for him utilizing $10 million, his salary + NIL, but not given us a return on investment last year and projected this year.  The ederly is me as well as many other fans my age who have contributed to the university but not providing the work needed to contribute back a ROI and then asking for $6 million more because he wants to take the easy way out.  That’s his new legacy

How are we defining ‘despicable human being’? Does he put others first or think primarily about himself? Does he work hard or is he a free-loader? Is he kind and considerate or is he thoughtless and cruel?

I don’t know him, personally, and my view is shaped largely by what others say. Can anyone vouch for his character personally?

I can. He’s a good person. He wanted the job because he loves the university, but he thought it was the IU of the 70-80-90’s. He didn’t-doesn’t have the drive needed to coach college in his 60’s. He was also a multimillionaire so that didn’t help either IMO. He’s a bad coach but a good person.

By many accounts, he's a fantastic person. My cousin who knows him very well talks about his character. I think he's way over his head and is embarrassed by his performance thus far.
