Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

If we’re putting out coaching lists. I fully admit the top 5 have a 1% chance of happening but I’d still offer them top 5 salary and make them turn us down first.

1. Brad

2. Dusty

3. Pearl

4. Scott drew

5. Shaka( built something great at Marquette and is from Wisconsin but maybe he wants to try his hand at a blue blood)

6 Chris Jans (winner everywhere he’s been and Mississippi St looks amazing this year)

7. Wes miller (probably would leave us for UNC if we ever get good)

8. Mccollum (not sold on his offense but he’s a winner and hopefully smart enough to adapt)

9. Hoiberg (good coach but may not have the personality for the job)

10. The Bucky McMillan, schertz of the world. I thought this tier of candidate was better last year but new names will pop up as the season goes. Unsure why shrews gets brought up since he’s had one good season his entire time coaching and even that wasn’t great. Intrigued by mark byington at vandy depending on how sec play goes.

They just cannot take responsibility for their actions on and off the court.  Our $1M NIL 7ft center brazenly went out to a popular bar on a Saturday night -- this is ridiculous behavior.

I hope whoever the next coach is cleans house, including whoever Tyme knows in the program.

I have no issue with these guys being college kids.  However, during the season discretion is in order.  A few cold ones after the game, no problem.  The night before is better spent eating well and getting some sleep.  There are plenty of nights to party hard in the offseason.

There is zero discipline in this program and the players know it. They know they can walk all over woodson

Of course he was and he will next game. Woodson is a pushover, and his million dollar players know it.

Frankly, it shouldn't take Woodson or any coach.  It's called pride in your performance.

I remember the old days when the Little 500 guys would abstain all semester -- that is until Saturday after the race.  And they where just doing it for fun.   :)

Programs like kansas paying guys big money don't have these issues. Might be a reason these guys choose iu over other schools . Other schools would not put up with it. Woodson does. And arizona did not even try to keep ballo so that should be a big red flag before giving him 1.2 million.

Agree.  He hasn't won big yet, but he is recruiting very well and appears to be a good coach that plays modern basketball.  That's the formula for success, this isn't rocket surgery.  Bonus points in that he cares and appears to be a straight shooter.  It stinks, but I think they got this hire right and he is going to do very well there.  Ugh.

He is going to be a problem for awhile. Kids are going to want to play in that system.

Just let these guys party and party hard the night before games.

It worked for Troy Williams et al. in the last B1G title season. Maybe these guys need to go to Brothers instead of Upstairs?

If Big Fella has a bum leg, and I noticed a distinct limp when Big Fella ran to help a guy up, then Woody did Big Fella a true disservice in the post-game comments by not using the non-specific, HIPAA-approved, and informative term... injured.

Maybe he was working on his game on the Pop-A-Shot.

When I was in college the entire team was at sports the night after we beat the Drew Neitzel MSU team. That was the most fun I’ve ever had at an IU game. My ears were ringing after. It was hilarious because only like half the team was 21 and EJ was barely 18 I think. But they were winning and this was pre instant social media pics. The Stone Age of needing a digital camera.

My point being, it’s happened forever, it’s just more visible now. It’s a bad look considering this team stinks, but had we won by 30 no one would care. Even then I don’t care. We wouldn’t have been 20 points better with Ballo in the lineup.

I see what you mean about Pope being far from a sure thing but at the same time, I think "sure things" are relatively few and far between when it comes to coaching searches. Theres only a handful of guys who have won titles in D1 ... you're not generally gonna be able to get those guys barring extraordinary circumstances. In terms of proven commodities - I'd definitely prefer to see some first place conference finishes/deep runs in March, but I think any search has to start with consistent winning and you can fill in the unique blanks to each search from there. Pope fit the bill for UK and seems to be paying off, though it's early. His ceiling may not be known yet as a coach but I think people can be reasonably confident he will win consistently at UK. On some level, that's sort of all you can ask for IMO.

My primary point (though not well made) was that whether it is the pressure of the job, or likely a variety of things, UK did not get their top targets.

Gotcha… yeah I think we’re likely to hire someone not being talked about much right now. So similar boat to UK in that sense. Hope we get it right too.

That was fun, unfortunately it was more or less the peak that season before the collapse.

I've got no issue with our players being out, I remember seeing players out all the time.  Going to the Vid after a game is fine, I don't care, though the timing here isn't great.

But being out late the night before a game is a problem.  It's a no-no in pretty much every sport at every level, and likely against team rules.  It shows a lack of discipline and seriousness, which is pervasive with this program.  We've only got 30 or so games, just stay in the night before like every other committed athlete.

We probably crossed paths that night...upstairs bar by the dance floor. Our favorite bartender worked up there solely...was over served far too many times to count. The good ole' days.

But...I agree, IU Players have been going out to the bars, during the season, for a long, long time...even the nights before games. I am confident that kids partying is not just an IU problem. The difference between us and other successful programs is that there is a large contingent of IU fans very unhappy with the program, Woodson and the players, and thus...pictures like this surface knowing it will reflect bad on a coach they want fired and a program they are unhappy with.

The accessibility of the internet and ability to share information at ease is a part of this, but IMO, other big time programs seemingly not dealing with / having these issues brought to light is not a product of players not partying or going out, but more to do with a fanbase at those programs unwilling to compromise the success of their team and looking the other way. People may not agree with players doing certain things, but you have to be in a pretty bad spot as a program IMO for fans to intentionally do things that will be detrimental to the players and team they follow / support.

Really good point here, which I didn’t really consider beyond it being a bad look. Says a couple things really— either the players don’t care the light it paints Woody despite being instructed to watch their actions. Or, they haven’t been instructed anything and they (team, Woody, et. al.) think they are somehow deserving of acting however they want.

Given the team and Woodys reactions to criticism last year and acting like they just won the Larry O’Brian after stringing together a couple wins over bad teams I tend toward the latter. It reeks of entitlement and lack of introspection. Zero chance Ballo is benched if that picture doesn’t surface and trying to paint it as an injury is pathetic. Just say it’s a violation of team rules. I’d have respected that.

Perhaps it's normal. I think most kids are smart enough to know that if you are out after midnight at a bar the night before a game that is pressure you don't need. If you have a bad game then that will be the blame. I doubt to many successful programs players are out doing that. If you are a star player and out like that night before a game you better be sure to play great imo or **** will be said on social media. I have no problem with kids having fun and drinking but not night before. Remember woodson has a curfew or did atleast on the road cause a few guys got suspended his first season i believe at northwestern.

I looked him up. His bio says he’s been 8 years.  So 4 with miller and 4 with woodson?  If crean did bring him in it was at the end.

Could be.  Did that bio state he was more on the football side of things?  Also, has he ever been affiliated with basketball as a strength and conditioning coach?  I kept thinking Crean hired him, then he was fired after that, not sure though.  I think if and when Woodson goes, I think everyone should go right out the door with him, including the strength and conditioning coach.
