Indiana vs. Harvard- Sunday 11/26 @ 4:30 PM on BTN

Recommended Posts

Plan A is working against 131, 135, 159, 232 and 331.   Plan A didn’t work at all against 3.   Moving forward the odds of Plan A working against upper level teams isn’t great.   If IU as a program wants to get to a place to compete nationally with the upper level programs they will need to go to plan B at some point.   That’s just my opinion though.  Roster isn’t built for plan B but man plan A isn’t ideal for todays game
I'm not for sure why it didn't work on any of those teams. We did win all thoses games? People on here want us to jack up threes to just do it, but that isn't a strength right now. Of course, while we can do Plan A, we should be working on improving on Plan B in practice. Hopefully, it will be more successful when we do have to pivot in those games (aka UCONN). This team is improving each game, and I'm excited to see them play Maryland next.

He said plan A DID work against the teams we beat.

No one is asking for IU to be a perimeter team first.  But we have to keep teams honest or they will collapse, and the teams we beat mostly just didn't have the size to defend it.  Other teams will, particularly in conference.  If IU were making 6 of 18 threes per game, we could probably live with that.

I feel like Banks deserves more minutes right now. He has been a plus for us. I also noticed Cupps (didn't have a great night) was listening about guards rebounding. He was really attacking the boards tonight.

Woody seems to like Walker as the stretch 4 and Banks as a wing. I’d like to see Banks get Walker’s small ball 4 minutes.  Ware/Reneau, Banks, MM, Cupps, and Galloway/XJ is a long athletic lineup that should score and defend close to the starting lineup but still allows you to rest a starting guard and starting post player.

Leal in mop up duty/when we've got a rotation guard injured is one thing (fine in that role). Playing over Gunn? I don't think he can affect winning better and I think if we are going to be dangerous in March, we need to get Gunna and Banks as much development time as possible. No thanks to playing him over Gunn at this point for me.

I’ve held my tongue for his entire time he’s been here bc I didn’t want to throw him under the bus and frankly, I was hoping my eyes and gut instinct were wrong….. but I’ll just say it. I’m confident that Gunn is NEVER going to fill the role that some expect him to. He’s not good enough to contribute, at a high level, to a winning basketball team. I don’t believe the current staff would have even targeted/recruited CJ out of high school. Yes he has physical upside but when I watch him play, I don’t see someone who’s going to move the needle for us in the W column, unless it’s being a leader on the bench, similar to Leal. Maybe give us a few good mins in mop up time.

I hope he proves me wrong, or that Woody is able to perform a miracle but I’d bet my house that I’ve got him pegged.

There’s a reason why the staff was desperately trying to recruit over him in the portal and when they struck out, there was real questions about our guard depth. Woody has said things along the lines of “I can’t wait around for them” when discussing Kaleb and CJ.

We have a massive hole at the 2 guard position. CJ isn’t going to fill it no matter how bad people want or expect him to.

Not sure you need to hold your tongue on that.  There are lots of doubts.

Some of your assessment I agree with - I don't see CJ being a contributor on a high level winning basketball team right now. I do see some potential for him to get there and I think he has more of that than Leal. That said, CJ has shown some things on the court that really make you shake your head, and a few seldom glimpses of the upside we need more of.

Of course the staff wanted to recruit over him. It's not that I expect him to fill the massive gap we have at the 2 guard, but I think he will be able to make us more competitive than Leal. He's still just a sophomore. Who even knows if we'll get to see what a junior Gunn at IU looks like with the portal being the way it is these days.

Banks has been impressive recently.

At this point I’ll take Leal’s IQ, leadership, and shooting ability in short mins. I know we shouldn’t judge off of one game but if we compared both guy’s impact on tonight’s result, I’d say we give those mins to Leal. He gave us a nice spark. Player really smart basketball while he was on the floor and we know he can knock down open 3’’s.

I don’t think having to play either guy is going to move the needle for us. I just disagree that Gunn gives us a better chance than Leal. Call it splitting hairs?

Agree with Banks. Absolutely love him. I’d love to see him get more mins. He really starts to settle in and build confidence with extended mins. Love his upside and he absolutely plays a winning style of basketball. He can be elite defensively.

Agree. Hummel mentioned it on the broadcast, that they have to start knocking down more perimeter shots bc teams are going to start packing the paint to force us to shoot. Mbako and Galloway have to be able to knock em down, or it’s going to get ugly in B1G play.

I'll say this - I'm not opposed to a couple of 5 minute stints of Leal playing with the starters to be honest. He does do a good job of keeping the ball moving and talking on defense from the little bit we've seen of him. I just feel like giving him Gunn's minutes seriously caps our upside in B10 play. But hey... maybe Leal gets another chance and takes on a bigger role. Would be great for the team!

Totally agree with Banks. He just reminds me a TON of a young OG honestly... he needs to get plenty of burn this season. Could be scary next year. I hope he gets a chance to shine in Atlanta vs Auburn since he's from GA.

Cupps isn’t Braden Smith yet or Mack from Harvard. I will say it’s nice to have a Freshman out there you can trust to try to make the right plays. But Leal came in because Mack was cooking Cupps. X has been flakey all season and the offense doesn’t flow that great with him at point. Gunn to me shows glimpses but you never see him long enough to get it figured out. Our guard situation is tough. Galloway does most of the little things but plays shooting guard without the ability to shoot.

Front court. Looks great so far!

Who had Ware on their Bingo card as "most consistent through 6 games?" Not me. A very good (and big) UCONN team took him out of his game, otherwise he's been really soild. Where would IU be without him, so far?

A few mos ago I asked "who needs to have a great season for IU to exceed expectations?" My answer was Trey, and it appears I might have been right. If he knocks down 35% from 3 and does the little things he always has, IU is MUCH better. So far he's struggling and they all seem disjointed on either end of the court.

Still if MM emerges and XJ is healthy and settles down, IU can still be a really solid team. FIgure it out on defense and a couple guys consistently hitting 3's......
