NCAA to “weed out” weed from banned drug list?

So the NCAA committee on competitive safeguards and medical aspects of sports has now proposed that testing be limited to performance enhancing drugs and has found that marijuana does not enhance performance (I know, that’s a shocking finding right?). Three NCAA divisional bodies would have to vote to approve, but weed may be removed from the banned drug list by the end of the year — and the committee has asked to halt testing at championship events while this is being considered.

This is about time, imo. The idea is treat weed like alcohol. Of course it doesn’t enhance performance, and while it’s now legalized in multiple states and the trend is clear, it’s grossly unfair to athletes to treat it as a banned drug for sports purposes. There have been olympic athletes who have been DQ’d from qualifying to participate or from events because of weed - I mean, how silly is that?

I don’t smoke anything, weed or cigarettes etc, and believe abuse of weed, just like abuse of alcohol, is unhealthy and can have all sorts of bad impacts, but penalizing athletes? Good to see the ncaa considering a positive move for the athletes

I think the only issue is the part I bolded. If you test positive for alcohol you’ve likely drank fairly recently. Weed can stay in your system for weeks. I agree that it’s time to stop punishing athletes for it.

*I’m not a doctor and this is based on what I’ve always heard so I could absolutely be wrong.

But the idea is they don’t test for it — it will be off the list. By treating it like alcohol I mean abuse — you can’t come to work- to a game etc drunk. It’s about quantity not treating it as a banned substance

I would consider it more stupid for those athletes to partake, though. Like.. they knew the rules, very clearly.

Ultimately, I'm glad they are deciding to do away with this though. Now let's go back to sitting out a year for transfers, and we can start to see some sensible regulation.

I do consider weed a gateway drug, but, on it's own.... nothing wrong with a little reefer.

I don't know about the stupid part, all kinds of athletes use/smoke weed, and again it's legal in many states throughout the country and has zero sports enhancement effects so context here, just silly imo. Side note, as I posted this almost a year and half ago, not sure prompted the convo, lol. I am all for sensible regulation -- the NCAA needs a great deal of improvement.

But... they knew the rules and willingly broke them. That's very stupid. Again, I don't think it should have ever been a banned substance, but to break a rule like that to cost yourself a shot at the Olympics... that's dumb.

I didn't see when all this was posted until after I posted my reply.
