Still more packed in those buy games at home then probably 90% of college basketball

I'm not arguing that. If only the results would match.

Maybe it'll take the IU fan base to show Maryland effort to get into the stands to push the administration to change. As is, they're getting the money without having to do more.

It’s not just the buy games. We’ve had this issue for 5+ years in conference games even. We struggle to come close to filling Assembly Hall unless we’re playing Purdue or another top team. An IU v. middle of Big 10 game is going to have a mostly empty balcony and maybe 75-80% full lower level. Back when things were great in 2012 we could fill Assembly Hall for a dunk contest and a light scrimmage.

Which is probably still more fans then 90% of the rest of college basketball gets if that is actually the case.  Can’t speak for all game but the games I’ve been to against non Purdue has been pretty full and a really good environment for a team that hasn’t made a tourney in 5 years I would say that is great attendance for a program  that has struggled

I think the lockdowns and everything showed a lot of people they didn't need sports or need to go to games.

Probably would take a complete shutdown by the fans to get their attention but you know as well as I do that isn’t going to happen.    Season tickets are still going to be hard to get.   People want to say they don’t care and apathy has set in.   They don’t watch anymore or it’s in the background.  I’ve checked out after the Marshall.   The reality is they haven’t checked out enough to end it.  They still love IU basketball enough to come a free message board in their free time.   It is what it is.   For better or worse most of us are here for the long haul regardless of outcome

Top 10% only puts us in the top 30 or so for schools, which is probably where we are as a program (though maybe not even that the past few years). A lot of schools would be happy with that but it’s just disappointing to be a top 30 program after being at the top for so long.

It’s funny the perception of low attendance at games by fans compared to the commentators doing the game and the other coaches playing the games.   Commentators pointing out the atmosphere inside assembly hall in early November and December.   Multiple broadcast pointed this out.   Listening to Jackson St coach after the game saying what a big deal it was to give his players the experience of playing at a place like Assembly Hall.  Pointing out that was the most fans his players have player in front of.   What the place be crazier and even more packed if they were really good.  Absolutely but my only point is that even with the limited attendance as some are pointing out they are still better then most

Top 30 without a single tourney appearance in over 5 years and a losing conference record seems pretty good to me

Commentators do it at basically every game. It just a part of their job to try and hype the game they're doing.

I think it's relative. I have a lot of family with degrees from IU and, in the past, were big into IU basketball. We would put HH on the calendar and make a weekend of it. When I was deployed or TDY all over the planet I would receive messages about games, recruits, and events. Hell, I would create spreadsheets of recruits, rankings, coaching stats, etc.

That's all in the past. I have family members who could get great seats for free who won't take the time out of their schedule. Early in the season, I'll get messages about the team winning but not looking great. Then it drops off. After yesterday, not a single message about the game. That's apathy. That's where this program has been headed for far too long. There will always be a group of diehards. However, that group will continue to shrink. As the administration has looked at the basketball program as 'just another sport' we began our descent. The descent has a long way to go because of where IU once stood in the college basketball world but it's progressing downhill. If things aren't corrected (I'm not talking about a bandaid fix of a player alumni coach and a half interested former Big 1.o coach/admin) we'll fall to where one of the few aspects that makes Indiana great, the fan support, will be below average just like a Maryland, Minnesota, Nebrasketball, or Rutgers.

Everyone lies.  Got it

I mean, to some extent, yes. Would you expect commentators to say "man, this place is just okay, it was much better a decade ago?" What would they gain by doing that? We can all see it wasn't what it was. The commentators that have been around for awhile can see it too. It might be the best crowd for some directional school but is it really "special" anymore? Special to those that knew it when it was truly special?

Not really when Top 30 is lower than what it was 5 years ago. 2016 we won the Big 10 and went to the sweet 16. Two conference titles and three sweet 16 appearances in the past five years. IU basketball looked like it might be back, or at least getting there.

But now, six years, two coaches, and zero tournament appearances later the program is in worse shape. We may be top 30 at the moment, but we’re too 30 and dropping. Time will tell if Woody can reverse that trend.

Not sure a thread 18 pages long 18 hours after it was posted would say that the fan base (or at least this board) is apathetic.  People are pissed.  Different thing.  Been a brutal stretch starting with Syracuse in losing games that were there for the taking.

Apathy takes on many stages. For me, I still watch games, I still come on here to chat/read etc but I stopped traveling to away games. I live in chicago and would go to northwestern, Michigan, Michigan state, Wisconsin etc and be excited to go and wear my candy striped pants proud. I don’t do that anymore and it started with the end of the crean era and it will take winning commitment from the players and coaches for that to change. What that has also meant is that my two sons that would have been going with me, are not so I am mot raising that same level of fandom in my kids that I grew up with. If they don’t turn it around my kids may not care at all and it’s dead for us, a tradition that started with my grandparents, parents, me would end. That’s what is at stake in the bigger picture for me and my family and I imagine many more across the country. It’s dying a slow death

I was talking attendance wise. Not sure how you turned it into top 30 overall program.   This whole back and forth was about attendance

I would expect them to call it like they see it like they do most of time.   If attendance sucks don’t bring it up that it’s a great atmosphere just pass over it like they do in other broadcast.    We’re they lying when they pointed out the atmosphere for the St Johns game?   I watched the game on TV after I was there live.  They pointed out how awesome it was in the building and since I was In the building I would have to agree with them on that one.  I can’t speak on if they are lying or not since I don’t know them but for me who has been in that building for big games the St Johns game was rocking.

Commentators don't get paid to be like "well this place is half empty. Atmosphere is blah as can be. Wish I were home watching HGTV instead."

Hallmark would be my choice

I said that being top 30 in attendance fits with where we probably are as a program. I.e., we’re a top 30 program and the butts in seats reflects that of a top 30 program. When we were a top 5 program in Knight’s hay day, Assembly Hall reflected that. Sorry if I was confusing.
