What affect will NIL have on recruiting going forward?

If it's true, that's not a legal way to use NIL, which wouldn't be surprising from Bama

I just can’t imagine why the administration would hinder boosters providing legal benefits but maybe you know something I don’t.

To do so, I think that would have to go against laws in some states on it.  Not sure the NCAA wants to fight legislation on it if their rules differ.

All I really care about is getting an NCAA 2K football and basketball game.  2K football coming back in 2022 without NIL, but likely will shortly follow with it.

The  NCAA has dictated that NIL payments must not exceed “market value” for the services provided.  Not only is “market value” vague the NCAA is 105% ineffective. There is little doubt this will be the Wild West.

9 states, including Indiana, don't have NIL legislation.

I going to go out on a limb here and predict the winners in recruiting before NIL will be the winners after NIL. Legally or illegally.

They absolutely will. They’re the biggest beneficiaries of this policy because they don’t have to be secretive anymore. The ‘gray area,’ isn’t going away, it’s just going to look different than before. The IU administration will force us to keep driving the speed limit and we’ll get left in the dust. 

We do have some shade on our staff, though, which does make me feel a little better.

This is what we need if we want to kill it with NIL. Donors throwing around serious cash, not just people with podcasts. (Not a shot at the HH guys, they aren’t even the ones I had in mind).

But seriously, I agree. I am grateful for the podcasters who have stepped up and tried their best to promote the athletes and get them paid, but we do need someone with actual money to back IU's NIL ventures. Would certainly be a game changer

Mannn Uncle Sam’s gonna want his student loan money back before that can happen haha. Schools like Texas are going to be at a big advantage with all the oil money down in the south. I don’t really know who the big time IU donors are, but hopefully we’re able to get something put together. We need a pretty good season to generate some buzz for them.

No surprise at the Texas announcement. Won’t be long until we see UK, Duke hedge fund guys, etc come up with the same thing. The podcasts can help disburse the money in cases like this.  The Texas group can pay a podcast a ton of advertising money with the understanding that most of the money goes to appearance fees for the athletes that come on the show and/or athletes are paid for commercials that are on the podcasts. 

IU’s basketball “brand name” means little if the NIL money doesn’t flow in.

Part of me wonders if NIL could make the Ivy League sports teams more competitive. They don’t give scholarships, but they let players get money through NIL. Talk about stupid numbers of rich people to draw from. Obviously you run into problems with admissions, but there are great athletes who are also great students who don’t go there because they don’t give athletic scholarships. Stanford is able to yield good teams.
