I just got an email from a buddy who is involved in IU broadcast media... don't know how "connected" he might be, and just passing this on for S&G:

Here’s a nuanced bit of new coach news. 

TJ Otzelberger is the coach at Iowa State. He’s been there four years and the Cyclones have been ranked in the top ten at some point during each of those four years. The athletic director at Iowa State is an old high school friend of Otzelberger.

Three days ago Otzelberger signed a new contract which includes a drop in his buyout figure to $2 million… if the AD leaves to take another job. The AD isn’t very well compensated by Big 12 or Big Ten standards. He makes $800,000 a year. I don’t know Scott Dolsons salary, but our football defensive coordinator makes more than twice the Iowa State AD makes. 

He’s what’s being floated: we hire TJ to be our coach and his pal, the AD, to be our basketball GM. 

 

Seems like a reach to me... and no clue what experience Jamie Pollard (ISU AD) has to qualify him for the BB GM gig...

Agreed on McDermott's success in the Big East, which brings up a pet peeve of mine.  Of the last 8 national champions, 4 have come out of the Big East (including the last 2).  In that time period the Big East has sent an average of 5 teams to the tourney each year.  So why do we keep referring to P4 coaches, when it's clearly a P5 situation in college basketball?

If we are to take the post from "Jackal" as gospel (and really, why would we not? Ha) and there is a list of five that somehow was shared and Cronin, Buzz Williams, Greg McDermott and Brad Brownell are not on that list then my guess for the five would be:

1. Scott Drew, 2. TJ Otzelberger, 3. Tommy Lloyd, 4. Ben McCollum, 5. Will Wade as someone being heavily vetted by the search firm?

P5 is basketball; P4 is football (Big East is out)...

Someone posted that exact "theory" on Peegs. I don't see why on earth a long-time AD would take a position as a glorified capologist and director of recruiting after being in Ames for 20 years and running a whole athletic department. If IU hires a GM, it should be someone with extensive ties in the recruiting world. That is the only point of a position like that and Pollard would not be that person unless he has some secret life deeply involved in the AAU basketball circuit. All that written, I suppose crazier things have happened but not many!

Unfortunately, yes, I can imagine something like that happening to IUBB ha. It would be all kinds of weird optically and everyone would get their cheap jokes in on social media but then IU would be left with a very good college basketball coach leading the program and hiring a great staff so worse things could (and probably will) happen!

The AD is 60. TJ is 47. They may have went to the same high school but I don’t think I’d qualify that as being buddies. So that alone makes me think this is all bogus.

I'd be willing to bet that the 5 names you've heard have already been floated on this board, so you might as well share with the rest of the class!
