General Coach Candidate News

Not sure why anyone would even consider McDermott.  He was absolutely horrible at ISU.  Only does well small schools.  Reminds me of Alford.

Because he is a really good coach that has proven he can coach at the Power 4 level.   You probably won’t have to worry about it though because history tells you sitting Power 4 coaches don’t make lateral moves to other Power 4 teams during coaching searches.   Usually teams have to go down a level or levels to get their coach

I'm trying to make sense of this, but Ned Pfau's plane N53HA is on the move again this morning.

While his tenure at ISU should be held against him.  Creighton has been a power 5 school for 11 years and he's finished worse than 4th only 2 of those years (years 2&3 of joining the conference). Creighton is not a small basketball school.  As someone pointed out, they were 6th in attendance last year per game. (Ahead of Indiana).

McDermott is 60 and has a building named after him at Creighton, as well. Should probably cross him off the list.

If Brad passes and Dusty does too, putting Mike Woodson ahead of the program last year when we could have got Dusty will look really, really bad.  You might say poor “optics.”

Here’s the problem with May now:

He is doing great. UM wants to redo his contract, no doubt in part because IU has an opening. May and his agent probably realize they are #2 on IUs list at best. They also know that the minute somebody else takes the IU job his leverage on this new deal with UM decreases quite a bit.

So Mays agent is going to be pushing hard for them to get this new deal done before the IU job is filled. I’m sure he’d like to wait and see if the IU job slips to him, but he also risks quite a bit of leverage (ie money) if he doesn’t hammer it out before the end of the season and IU announces Stevens or whomever.

Just a stone cold guess, but I would say there’s only a 50% chance Mays agent doesn’t get this new deal done—thus taking him off the market—before IU is ready to make a hire.

He is 3rd on the latest hot board released so something has happened to push in to 3rd when he wasn’t on the first 2 hot boards

If McDermott takes the job he would be leaving a place that averages more fans at their home games then IU does.

Yup. There still seems to be this perception that it’s not a big-time job. It’s a BIG-TIME JOB. If McDermott were to leave for any reason they would have a great list of candidates.

To the point:

Yes, Cignetti was a great hire and showed some coaches can make the leap from lower level competition to higher level competition. But this isn’t definitive and is not indicative of how we should pursue our basketball hire.

The football program has always been a laughing stock whereas, at least historically, the basketball program is top tier. This is why the approach should be different and IU should start at the absolutely highest level when considering candidates.

Cignetti was a P5 assistant coach for many years, including for Nick Saban at Alabama!

McCollum has never been a division one assistant coach. If McCollum had been a multi year assistant coach for Coach K, then this would be a completely different discussion and he would be a great candidate.

I laugh from the jump at people thinking we were getting dusty. I always felt he was a far longer shot than stevens. They will give him a bigger contract. He isn't leaving already imo

I’m very torn on McCollum. If it’s not Brad, Dusty, Oats (highly unlikely), there’s part of me that’s thinking let’s roll the dice with McCollum. I have a weakness for the young coach who can be here 20+ years.

However, as we all know, they absolutely can’t mess this hire up. He’s a pretty big gamble, but could also be a grand slam.
