I think regardless of whether or not it's ideal to rely on young players, having some culture builders coming into the program can only be a plus.

FWIW. 

 Former Tulane wing, and previous Detroit commit Jadan Coleman has re-entered the transfer portal.  Coleman is a 6-4 RS-junior from Alabama. He’s averaged 4.5 points on 34.6% 3P in 14 stars over his 62 career games.

We didn't really have an option to bring in a good guard with the rest of the roster makeup though, if we are talking in terms of being realistic. 

Like... if we brought a dude in that could actually help us, we didn't have the mins for him.

I just dont really buy that. There were literally hundreds of two guards and programs like Auburn, Tenn, Arkansas, etc all loaded up with top talent despite loaded rosters. It is a nice excuse but the bottom line is we got nobody and it could end up biting us if we have injuries. Leavng a grant open in this day and age with the portal is almost criminal imo.

So your takeaway is that we could have gotten a really good SG but did not?

If so, what's your explanation?

So... where was that "really good" SG going to play? 

TG/XJ are starting and playing 30mins or more per game, MM the same thing. That is 90 of the 120 "guard mins" ,at minimum, that are already gobbled up. Cupps is playing 10-15 mins a night... so you're going to convince "a really good player" to play, AT MOST, 10-15 mins a night.... cmon now. 

"we got nobody", but factually speaking --- we got XJ, Cupps, Newton, Sparks, Ware, Walker, and MM... and yes, when teams have injuries it regularly derails their season. Lemme know how good Purdue will be if Edey goes down.

Newton is already out who knows if he will even play. My whole point it nobody should wine come feb if we have a bunch of inuries and have no guard  depth. We had an open grant and choose not to use it.

Ok, but the staff DID bring him in. 

If any team has a bunch of injuries, they won't have guard depth.. we aren't an anomaly in that sense.  

If Quinn Buckner got hurt, what was Bob Knights plan? Or Isiah? 

Crean had no backup plan for Yogi? 

These just aren't things any team can really prepare for and it's confusing that someone would think the coaching staff is somehow at fault? 

We did just pick up 2 better than average walk ons, one being a D1 scholly guy from AF, but I think we're best served to use that scholly on '24.

I was hoping to get a starting 2 so we could bring Galloway off the bench.

I said it was just my preference and have said it that I don't think he is a starter on a championship caliber team.  He reminds me of a Steve Eyl type who was a key player off the bench for a championship team.

Woodson was recently quoted as saying that Gallo has been the best player on the court in our summer team workouts. And the best player on the team does not come off the bench.

I’m not sure who Gallo’s Indiana comp is, but I am sure that it’s sure as hell not Steve Eyl.

What is strange is how often in retrospect a player becomes a 'starter on a championship caliber team' AFTER the fact.

I think most people would agree that IU's 1992 team that went to the final four had a championship caliber team.  The five guys who logged 24 or more starts that year were Calbert Cheaney, Damon Bailey, Alan Henderson, Eric Anderson, and.....Chris Reynolds.  That team was a 2 seed and a final four team.  The 2002 team that made the final game had a normal starting five of Jared Jeffries, Tom Coverdale, Jared Odle, Dane Fife, and Kyle Hornsby.  How many of those five are starters on a 'championship caliber team'?

And this is his first offseason where he has not spent recovering from an injury or surgery. Hopefully this is huge for him to add more to his game.

Not sure how to feel about that. I’m a huge Gallo fan - I think he is a greater leader and spark plug but was hoping to see one of Ware or Mbako take that honor.

we know what X is, we know what Gallo is, we don’t really know what to expect from Ware or Mbako.

I'm not a fan of whining at any time but it makes a whole lot more sense to whine in February if that were to actually happen than it does to peremptorily whine now that it could possibly happen.

Ideally, it would be great to have a clear backup for each position plus a couple other backups capable of covering multiple positions. In reality, recruiting is not like a NBA 2K draft, the players ultimately decide where they want to play and "come be a back up likely playing 10 minutes or less per game" is a hard sell. It is an especially hard sell in transfer portal recruiting.

Woody said Gallo was the best Hoosier on the floor as of summer workouts. I think that all would agree that Ware, Mbako, or Reneau are much more likely to be our most impactful player by the end of the season.

That doesn’t really put to rest the fears of needing an extra guard due to potential injuries.  
 

Another way to say it is that our starting backcourt that we desperately need to be healthy all year both have injury histories.  
 

I’m a big Galloway fan, too. I think I’ve wrote before that if he can add a pull-up jumper off the dribble the way he added a spot-up jumper last year, he’ll be competing for an All-conference spot.
