Purdump has front line problems. Getting Hermie Loyer back won’t solve that.

They weren’t anything special with those guys, so I wouldn’t worry about any of them coming back, even if TKR could.

It does create some interesting scenarios with the new 5:5 rule. Arguably both Smith and Loyer might’ve come back had they known ahead of time.  I bet the Pacers wish they had finished that contract already.

TKR and Cluff were both pretty strong college players.

They are replacing them with Jacobson and Pierce, an overachieving and undersized Ivy League player.

That’s rough.

Never gonna end.

Lots of dumb judges out there, and my initial assumption that the class certification would get major pushback was correct. I think the NCAA might win this one or at least get their own injunction from the appeals court.

What is more interesting here, I think, is there is no mention of the Tennessee case. I assume that means they’ll roll over there like they usually do and let Alexis and friends stay eligible.

Kaufmann-Renn redshirted so is not in the same boat.

I would not be surprised to see Smith and Loyer try and come back somewhere though, even if not Purdue

If Smith ever wants to play in the NBA, probably wise not to walk away from the hometown team that traded up to get him. Financially the move makes some sense, but for someone who has NBA aspirations, coming back to college doesn’t make a ton of sense.

Loyer and Smith coming back has been living rent-free in my head for awhile, but since the draft, I don't see Smith returning. The Pacers traded into the draft specifically to get him; they aren't going to let Purdue make him a better deal.

Kaufmann-Renn is done. He had his 5 years. I know he didn't play the first one, but that wasn't because he was hurt, it was because Painter didn't play him.

Smith could command $4-5mil next year alone by coming back to college. I don’t think there’s anyway the Pacers are going to guarantee Smith $4-5mil as a 2nd round pick or else he’d be signed already.

That being said, Smith likely ends any chance of a long term NBA career by walking out on the Pacers.

Edit: the Pacers couldn’t even if they wanted too. Given the Pacers cap situation, the max deal they could offer Braden Smith is a one year $1.35 mil rookie 2nd rd maximum. And that would count towards the Pacers roster limit regardless if he spends the whole season in Noblesville. A two-way contract is the most practical approach and probably the only way it works out for both parties.

I don't think he has a legitimate shot to stick in the NBA. Just my opinion.

I would guess he makes more in one extra year of college ball, than he will ever make in the NBA.

Not sure I’m completely with you here. I like Alexis as a piece for this particular team because he raises your ceiling a little but he raises your floor a lot. Are there more talented dudes, sure, but the players who’ve suddenly popped up, be it Smith or Saunders or Hall or Mitchell are good players but there’s a reason they’re available. If somebody’s gonna throw 7 million at Braden Smith he better give them Natty aspirations and if he does then they already had final 4 aspirations because he’s not option 1 who transforms a ceiling. He’s a really great force multiplier.  But you win Natty’s with NBA guys and none of these guys are NBA guys or they’d be NBA guys. I’m not saying I wouldn’t take any of them. I’d love to have Mitchell. But he’s option 3 on a good team including probably this one and I don’t think that’s worth the jack that an overheated market is about to throw at him. These kids are like the top 70ish high schools of the preportal era who had nice offer lists but didn’t sign in the fall and by spring elite schools with open roster spots would offer them when they hadn’t offered them 6 months before. Smith and Dent are better than that, but these other guys aren’t. They are straight up being inflated because of a combination of name recognition and timing.

The only reason that Mark Mitchell entered the portal is because Mizzou didn’t plan ahead and save a spot for something like this to happen. I’d want Mark Mitchell over Alexis 100 out of 100 times. He’s a straight DUDE

Admittedly, I haven't followed Puredoodoo's offseason but if Jacobson and Pierce are really going to be their starting front court... my first reaction is that this will be their worst team in quite a while.

My second thought is might Painter just completely reinvent things and somehow make it work? Maybe, but I don't see how they manage the Big 10 for a whole conference season. Rebounding would be pretty tough for them relying primarily on those two IMO.

Cue the “Painter always finds a way” chorus, but it appears that is so. He also has a 23 year old PF Euro trying to get eligible, but that Euro has never gotten minutes anywhere, albeit in high level leagues.

After their Canadian trip, their starting lineup appears to be Jacobson, Pierce, Omer Mayer, Cox, and Antoine West.

I’d be surprised if we add anyone but Alexis.  He addresses a serious need and he won’t break the bank.  I think we’re low on remaining budget as we’ve all noticed.  His locker room fit is also very good and low risk.

A lot of the links to IU seem exaggerated by agents.  I could see IU asking basic info on a portal entry (just to check) and that somehow turns into “interest from IU.”

I’m good with Alexis.  I don’t think anyone we add will get us to a B1G title or F4.  So another $2-3M player just seems like an iffy ROI.  We’ve spent a ton and I’d like to see CDD show some coaching chops and prove he deserves more money.  If we have a good season, season three we could have a maturing stable roster that could win things and then spending more makes sense.

The IU athletic dept doesn’t have unlimited money… so realistically the Alexis add looks really nice and hopefully it gets finalized soon.

RJ Godfrey to Arizona. Ok get as long as your system doesn’t require your 4 to be able to space at all.
