At least he has had both championship caliber offenses amd defenses this decade. Something we havent seen at IU. Im not saying Alford is a homerun, not saying I want Alford, but he is better than Crean.  Also, Iowa is not a quality job. Fran isnt recruiting well at all. This is a terrible Big ten right now and Iowa struggles. They have no recruiting base to pull from  making it difficult to win their.
The Wilkes commitment is all about under armor, not LA. This is from an off record conversation with a IU recruiting/reporter. Steve is willing to go into the grey area that Crean wouldnt. You must go into the grey to win the top players today, see Alford recruting wins vs Crean not landing a single top 30 player the last couple of years.


Well said!!! Freaking Iowa, New Mexico, SW Missouri St......none are recruiting got beds. He's a Midwest guy, think that is the run for UCLA fans, he's not 'hollywood" enough for them.

To his credit had to been hard to recruit kids to SW Missouri St., Iowa and New Mexico. I was a sophomore in high school when IU won in 1987 and drove from Terre Haute to go watch them play and especially Alford (Indiana kid, kept his mouth shut, played as an olympian, led team in scoring, etc.)?

I guess I am just confused with the hate......What did Alford do to piss everyone on here? Was it because he got Luke Recker to Iowa and you've been unable to forgive him? Didn't he get SW Missouri St. to a couple of sweet sixteens, won 2 Mountain West Championships at New Mexico for God's sake, yeah at New Mexico.

Nothing against New Mexico, but how do you win consistently at a place like New Mexico if your not a great recruiter or half of a coach? Is there something that Alford did that I may have missed besides backing Bobby Knight all these years? He would recruit the hell out of this state and I think a lot of high school coaches would have a great rapport with him.....just saying, off my soap box. Lol

For me, it started with the Pierre Pierce rape aftermath. How he attempted to utilize the Athletes in Action priest to quiet the girl and get her to drop it. Alford had him stage it as an intervention of sorts after blasting her in public after being raped by his star player. Beyond that his record of making the tournament is atrocious. Until this year which we will see how he finishes he was universally hated by UCLA fan base as a horrible coach to the point he gave up money to the school. Rule of thumb for me is if a fan base isn't sad to see you go there is a reason. They dislike him more than we do with Crean.
