TOM CREAN FIRED

I go back and forth on Alford.  Sometimes I feel I'd rather keep Crean, then I watch the game and suddenly Alford starts sounding better.

Doubt Alford would abandon ship at this point.. He's coaching a blueblood and has an annuity of "Ball's" coming his way over the next several years.

A lot of people saying, "I'd take him," or "___ would be good," but the reality is, it's not easy to pry a good coach from a winning team away from a situation where he knows the obstacles, is getting paid well, and winning games. At IU, you'd be dropping him into an unknown situation with new obstacles, and a bunch of question marks. Can we pay you? Yes. Are the facilities top notch? Yes. But that's not everything to everyone.... I think we all better start facing the fact that Crean is going to be here for at least another season.

Imagine how toxic it'd be if Crean was extended, that is if people don't just tune out at that point.

It is either time for fred to fire him or time for fred to step aside. If he is not willing to to make the tough decision he should not be an AD. Its not our job to find crean a soft landing. An extension would only lead to an incredibly toxic situation.

Let's break down the Alford thing.
Sans Brad Stevens or Billy Donovan, you have a bunch of names that you look to that have unknowns.  NOW, perhaps, one of these guys has the potential to be a legend.  We don't know.  But the way I see it, it is all about what we assume is the potential "upside" of each name.
So, Miller 1 and Miller 2, Marshall, Collins, Bennett....and Alford.
I don't want to break each person down individually, but the prior 4 candidates are all "up and coming."  They're all succeeding and are in an upward trajectory for the most part.  So, it is fair to think, "Wow, with Indiana's in state talent, facilities, budget, fanbase, this person could really do something special."
With Alford, we have a guy who has a looooong coaching track record that goes back to 1991.  It's up and down.  At Iowa, he was there for 8 years, never made it out of the 2nd round and only finished above .500 in conference 3 times.  He was .477 in the B1G.  Not good.  But, he turns it around at New Mexico in a lower conference.  At UCLA, he's had a mixed record.
Alford is more of Tom Crean.  A pretty good coach that can show flashes here and there.  But never able to make the consistent progress a top level program that competes for championships needs to have.  I'd rather risk a chance on the up-and-comers with more unknowns, but more potential upside, than a guy that has been around for over a quarter-century without a single visit to the Final Four or beyond.

Oh thank god. Another level headed poster has picked up the argument against Alford. Preach, my friend.

Hell no... It would be too much to bear were I to face it, and it also is not likely true!

I personally think Alford wants to come home. I also think that is the reason that Dakich always mentions his name when he talks about the possibility of replacing Crean.

I hope you're right... But everything I'm seeing and hearing other than the fact that Crean seems to think he'll be around next season, is a rumor. Some already shot down (IE the "Missouri will be the 'soft-landing' spot for Crean" stuff.)

Alford has a top 5 team, is coaching the most storied program in college basketball history in terms of championships, and is in LA. I'd gladly welcome him home, but damn, it seems like it would be hard for him to leave right now.

Honestly, beyond the fact that I dislike Alford's track record which includes both mild success similar to Crean's and an inexcusable moral blemish, I am convinced he would be given a much longer leash as the hometown hero if he underperformed as coach. Boosters seem hesitant to make a rash discussion firing Crean, and rightfully so, because instability is never good for a program. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to convince enough boosters to move on from Alford if he had success similar to what he has achieved in the past.

Everything is a rumor until it happens in these scenarios, including the rumor that he wants to stay. I see a lot more information trending toward he gone-erooski.
