Hey, icing the kicker actually worked in the Oregon-Washington game.

Really hope Oregon finds a way to win; Washington is gonna get smacked around and lose by 40 against Bama if they made the college football playoffs

Wow, some crazy games today.  LSU dominates Georgia (no worries, they'll still find a way to get a second $EC team into the playoffs).  Penn State slips up at home to MSU after MSU lost to Northwestern at home.  Northwestern almost loses to a terrible Nebraska team.

Miami just lost to Virginia. West Virginia looked horrible against Iowa State

There’s absolutely no way a second SEC team gets in the playoff now. Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Notre Dame would be the playoff if it were announced tomorrow

It'll happen the same way it happened last year if LSU beats Bama at home. Then the LSU/UGA winner in the $EC title game makes the playoff and Bama because Bama.

I know we can all make data show what we want, but take a look at their schedules with opponents FPI and RPI, below respectively. Of course, these are fluid values that change week to week, so I’m JUST sharing to show how similar the overall body of work seems with numbers attached. Even with Furman having a terrible RPI, Clemson’s average RPI opponent wasn’t too far from Notre Dame and their FPI is a slightly better average. Add in a championship game against either a Miami or Virginia Tech (assuming Clemson wins ACC title game) forms my opinion that an undefeated Clemson would get in over an undefeated Notre Dame.

NOTRE DAME SCHEDULE (FPI/RPI)
Michigan 6/16
Ball St 105/125
Vandy 62/54
Wake 68/53
Stanford 20/20
VTech 34/40
Pitt 72/79
Navy 101/96
NW 42/65
Fla St 52/84
Cuse 45/43
USC 37/44

FPI Avg - 53.7
RPI Avg - 59.9

CLEMSON SCHEDULE (FPI/RPI)
Furman NA/184
TAMU 18/24
Ga Southern 76/47
GTech 38/75
Cuse 45/43
Wake 68/53
NC State 29/15
Fla St 52/84
UofL 92/107
BC 39/56
Duke 33/36
South Carolina 30/28

FPI Avg - 47.3
RPI Avg - 62.7

I appreciate the discussion and love data. I underestimated some of the teams Clemson has on their schedule and overvalued some of Notre Dame's opponents. I do think with Miami's loss to Virginia a Clemson win against Miami in the championship won't be as impressive. However, if Clemson wins out they'll definitely be in. I don't think the PAC 12 or BIG 12 have a team to that makes the playoff now.

I agree with you. Miami losing today definitely hurts Clemson’s overall SOS. I think the Big12 has an outside shot to get in, but A LOT would have to happen for them to get in.

Alabama isn’t going to lose. That’s a forgone conclusion

Just curious: are there any good teams in college football? All I seem to read here is Alabama's schedule sucks, Clemson's schedule sucks, Notre Dame's schedule sucks but even if it didn't they'd still get embarrassed because of a game 6 years ago, Pac-12 sucks, Big 12 sucks...on and on.

Where did anyone say their schedule sucks?  There was an actual discussion comparing Clemson and Notre Dame's schedules.  The PAC 12 and BIG 12 have some good teams but I don't think they have a playoff worthy team.  Could Texas even think about the playoffs after getting beat by Maryland?  Could Oregon get in after losing to Stanford?  I'm not sure there is enough left on their schedule to get into the playoff.

To answer your questions, there are many good teams in college football.  However, there doesn't seem to be a clear top tier like in the past few years.  Bama seems to be up there but everyone else is extremely vulnerable.  IMHO

This SEC bias crap gets old. Nothing is biased towards that conference

Agreed. They’ve got good coaches, a hotbed of recruiting in which they keep a lot of players home, and are damn fun to watch. While I hate the ‘SEC’ cheer, I enjoy watching Bama, Georgia, LSU, and a majority of the other SEC schools. Fun football to watch
