End of Game Strategy

Hutch you saying it sends a bad message to take a knee and try to let our special teams win it. But not giving them the same chance also sends a bad message.

A team has to go with what gives them the best chance to win. And the best chance would have been running the clock down and kicking a FG. Maybe he misses and we go to OT but most likely he makes it and we win.

So much can go wrong when you give the other team 50 seconds against our defense. As evidenced by the 80 yard touchdown drive they executed to perfection. Worst case in my scenario is overtime. Worst case in score first is they win by going for 2. Which we ALL knew they would.

Our defense is bad, I know. I still think we picked the better of the two bad options. In my football experience, you take the points when you can get them. Michigan had a 37 yard chip shot to beat Appalchian State and look at what happened. Just proves that anything can go wrong at any time. If we would've let the clock run down and then either banged the kick off the post, fumbled the snap, or gotten blocked, it would've gotten the same reaction as us getting the points and then giving up the TD and ensuing 2 pt. conversion. I'm just glad we lucked out, which we can all agree that we did.

I love this topic and still think it was done correctly. But let's talk about it some more after I make it my Sunday Morning Quarterback analysis topic. It should be up in 30 minutes or so. You can disagree with me there too

I most definitely will disagree with you over there as well. I'll start typing my rebuttal now.

I'm going to start with...

"Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to bring you over to BtownBanners? This kind of hack logic doesn't belong over here. You have to be trolling us here Hutch, we run the clock down and..."

Good start huh?

I know what you are getting at here, but a 37 yard chip **** is MUCH different than an extra point. Extra points are the most successful play in all of football. I realize their kicker missed one after it was moved back, but it's still the most successfully executed play in the game today.

So hypothetical.

If their kicker hadn't had missed the extra point after it was moved back, do people think we would have played this scenario out differently? Cause if he hadn't had missed they would have just needed a touchdown and extra point to win, unless we went for 2 and converted.

I'm already on the kneel down and center the ball for the easiest possible kick side of the argument. But I guess it would be interesting to see how the scenario would have played out had he not missed their last PAT

Run out the clock to take it out of our defenses hands and go for a FG to beat an FCS opponent, which gets blocked and returned for a TD.  It wouldn't get much more IUFB than that, except for the first punt of the season getting blocked and recovered for a TD.

Or IU getting a delay of game penalty on the opening kickoff of the season opener.

If Charlie Sheen was an IUFB fan it would go a long ways to explaining his issues with alcohol and drugs.  Hey, at least our first offensive play was a pick 6.

Third what message are you sending to your team if you do all that?

The message is at worst, the same message I hope they're going to have screamed at them this entire week every single moment of practice.

The defense in that game was embarrassing and if they ever play like that again they don't deserve their spot on the team.

Maybe showing them we can't even trust them to prevent a 0:58 touchdown drive (justifiably) will help that message sink in. Though, something tells me their failure in the last minute of the game stung worse.
