Rule Changes and IUBB...

Recommended Posts

Any thoughts on how (if approved) the rule changes benefit/hurt IU? Brief run down of substantive rules (help me out if I forget any important ones).

-Shot Clock to 30s
-Reduce timeouts; only 3 Carry-over
-Combine coach/media timeouts within 30s
-10s to the timeline doesn't reset
-Increased restricted zone (4ft)
-Stricter enforcement of defensive fouls
-Dunk in warm ups
-Hanging on rim tech change (1shot)

All told I think CTC has to be salvaging over these rules. Speed up the game and benefit a fast paced team? That sounds like us. Even the restricted area rule plays to his forte. In a vacuum I like these rules anyways, but as an IUBB fan I think this could be a big help next year. Thoughts?

Capt. Crean is gonna have to salvage the dismissal of Devin and Hanner before he salvages the new rules. :D

Three posts to off-topic. New BTB record?

Nope, just joking that you meant to use salivate.

I think all these changes will be for naught if refs call every bit of arm/hand contact but keep allowing the paint area to resemble a Greco-Roman wrestling match.

So now we'll have even less timeouts for Crean not to use?

Haha, in all seriousness I don't think the new rules will do anything but help IU as long as Crean is here.  We're an uptempo, fast-paced team.

The one thing I do worry about is the stricter emphasis on defensive fouls, which could put our post players in foul trouble a lot quicker.  Thomas Bryant is going to have to stay out of foul trouble.  If we don't get any 5th year post players, we could certainly suffer a few games in the event of early foul trouble.  I would love to see NCAA go to 6 fouls per player.

The reduced shot clock could put more emphasis on good decision making. Some on the team had a habit of putting up some questionable shots already. Will the shorter clock increase the number of bad shots?

I have always hated the charge/block semi-circle. Just make the call the way the rules were written years ago.

The reduction in timeouts probably just has CTC thinking "See?!?!?! I WAS RIGHT!!! I WAS RIGHT THE WHOLE TIME!!! WHO NEEDS TIMEOUTS!?!?!"

Or "Man, those 80 million I've saved up will really come in handy at some point.  WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY DON'T ROLL OVER?!?!"

Get ready for the game to stop even more often because the refs calling stupid ticky tack fouls.

Please stop repeating this line. The college game over the last 10-15 years has become overly physical and is hurting the game. Go back and watch old NCAA tournament games on YouTube and watch how the game flows. It was a much better game. You can play defense, still be physical, and not foul the way players do today. Claiming they will be calling "ticky-tack" fouls is simply incorrect. The refs will be enforcing rules as they are written. Yes, it will likely take time for coaches/players to adjust, because they've gotten away with manhandling the offensive player for so long now, but as long as the refs stick to their guns it will be much better in the long run.

IMO, the biggest problem with foul calls is consistency. Not even across conferences, not even within a conference. Even from first half to second. I don't know what the answer is but it needs to get better. Oh, and the "make up" calls need to stop. Law of averages says you'll get as many against as for you. If a ref knows he made a mistake he should just work harder at not making another one.

Pretty sure Crean will wear out  his rotator cuff and voice yelling Go Go Go!

No dunking in warmups is a rule to save glass shattering among other things.

Does the NCAA not yet have NBA goals? Those are impossible to shatter. And when was the last you saw a shattered backboard in a game? And most players don't try to rip the rim off during warm ups. There really is no reason to not let kids dunk.
