Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

As for alum we have: Alford, Cheaney, Fife, Crews, Smart, Woodson off the top of my head.

Alford: Please no. Not just the Pierce situation either. Crean's resume is pretty unimpressive and Steve's is even worse.
Cheaney: Just now becoming an assistant, needs more seasoning
Fife: Needs more seasoning
Crews: He's getting up there in age
Smart: No collegiate experience and in the NBA (assistant for the Heat)
Woodson: See above.

None of those are really confidence inspiring. It doesn't have to be an 'IU guy' though.

EDIT: Forgot Guyton, but he's coaching a semi pro team IIRC.

Smart was head coach for the cavs,Warriors, and kings

LOL, Dakich's comment about coaches at football schools is telling. I wonder what coach he might be referring to?

He said if we offered Matta, "he would come running here". Now, Dakich obviously knows more about it than any of us here, but I wonder how true that is. He also laughed off a Billy Donovan comment which I thought was interesting.

He laughed off BD when someone said he would not come here. He read that and snickered. Did he say something different later

Nope that's the one I was referring to. That's what I meant by "laughed it off" but I didn't word it very well. I meant that as in he laughed at the guy who said he was doing too well at UF to leave even though it is a football school.

1. Brad Stevens
2. Donovan
3. Archie Miller
4. Tom Crean

If we don't like the options available, I don't want to just jump ship to jump. Getting a new coach that isn't our forever coach will only delay the process. I want to WIN BIG with this next hire.

Agreed, I am one of the ones who wants TC gone yesterday, but if we put some feelers out to BS and his camp says give it one more year then by all means keep Crean another year and wait for BS. If BS says no way I am an NBA lifer then I still like your list.

Let me throw a name out there. Thad Matta. Please don't think in anyway I want this to happen, but let me play devil's advocate. He coaches at a football school just like Billy D, he is a very good recruiter, if coaches like Coach Cal & Pitino were thinking about taking over IU when it was in as bad a shape as it was in 2007 then I would think pretty much any coach who sees how much potential to be the HC at the dominant school in one of the most if not the most dominant basketball states in the country could pursuade a guy.

I guess by making that arguement I am pretty much saying I think anybody is in play here. Short of Coach K, Coach Cal, Self and Roy, Izzo. You guys may come up with 1 or 2 more, but I still think a fat check and god like throne to sit on can change a lot of peoples minds.

Wait, so now no one wants Alford or Crews or Calbert? Our fanbase has changed so much in the last 5 months.

I think they are fairly far down on my list, but I would not be super upset if we got a Crews/Cheaney combo with Crews mentoring Calbert to take over in 5-10 years. I have no doubt in my mind they have the X & O's knowledge, my only question would be the recruiting aspect. Like everyone says most of these kids (out of state kids) have never seen or heard of Calbert Cheaney.

For anyone saying we couldn't land the big name coach...

Look at Michigan and Harbaugh. If you price it right, many coaches would make the jump. Loyalty to schools or employers isn't all it's cracked up to be. You want a big boy coach, pony up and make him come here.

Outside of K, Self, Cal & Roy... You can sway them with $$

I still really like Ray Harper from WKU. I seriously doubt he will ever even get a look from IU, but the guy already has 4 National Championships and 5 more Runner-ups. For those of you counting that is 9 appearances in a title game.

Plus Coach Cal and Pitino already hate him, so he should fit right in.

I just don't find him to be elite. He's certainly better than Crean, but I couldn't see him bringing a championship to IU

in 10 seasons at OSU he has a .765 win percentage, 4 big ten tourney championships, 5 big ten regular season championships and 2 final fours and other tourney wins as well.

All that in 10 years at a football school
