Purdue Post Game Thread

Here is the thing I question. Many people talk a bunch of trash about this stat like it is the most insignificant stat there is. I say go look at games you felt we played good defense and we "were all over the place". Then look at deflections. Then compare them to last night. There is no 100% telling tool to tell a story. There are a bunch of variables that tell a story. Deflections are one of those. Like baseball getting modern with advanced stats, I am glad basketball is as well. Just because it wasn't an obvious stat when I was born should I minimize it. I prefer to understand why it is critical.

I can be a stat geek myself at times but the one stat that really sticks with me is w-l. I will say there are times that Crean will say so-and-so had a great game with x # of deflections and I think, huh? Didn't look like he had much to me. IDK I'd like him to define what he thinks a deflection is at times. There are times I think TW hours for deflections and just ends up being out of position...and others also. I think position is more important than deflection myself.

Sometimes a team has a night when everything works and everything goes right. We had such a game against Maryland. Purdue had one last night against us. Everything they tried to do worked, every loose ball rolled into their hands (not because of lack of effort or horrible play on our part, either...sometimes the ball just bounces that way). I saw guys who were blocked out get offensive rebounds anyway because that's the way ball bounced. Purdont might have beaten Kentucky last night.

I suspect Rutgers had a similar night when beating Kaminskiless Wisconsin. But one game doesn't alter the hierarchy of the league, and we are better than they are overall.

We should simply tip our jockstraps to Painter, who had his team hyped to the nth degree before a loud sellout crowd, and to the toiletmakers players, several of whom I am sure had their best games of the year, and extract our revenge when they come to Assembly Hall.

Exactly it is how you use a stat to tell a story. I agree he uses stats to his advantage but who doesn't? However a deflection where you alter the path of the ball is one of the top 3 critical indicators of activity that determine the outcome of a game. Like you said, the stat that matters is w-l. There is a direct correlation between deflections as well as w-l. It is far from a laughable stat.

Deflections allow for help defense to collapse. Steals are great but they may be due to a deflection. Deflections allow your defense to settle or catch up with the motion of an offense.

what's he saying? give the scoop

Basically, saying how arrogant that the Admin. has been since Knight when it comes to giving love to the former teams and player.  The fact that IU culture is the worst in the big 10 according to others he rubs elbows with in the media biz now.  To wit; Landon Turner called the show and echoed the same!  Eye-opening to me anyway!

I'm sure DD knows a lot more about how the ADMIN has been to former players, but I'm not so sure I'm buying it. It seems this crap always comes up after a big loss and when we beat a top team Crean should be coach of the year....

That just does not jive with some of the other stuff I have read, but I have no idea what is true and I'm sure as hell not part of the "old guard", so no inside info from me....

Wow, they are saying that there is no love towards the "old guard"? Really? That sucks big time! That gives me a case of the A$$

Tough to buy after bringing back the '87 team two years ago to be honored at the Stetson game. They gave out commemorative calendars to autograph. They split the team in half for signings, and we're still unable to accommodate fans waiting for autographs.[attachment=1580:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1422562730.192850.jpg]

Can we copy these two for four years?

Gotta take what DD says with a grain of salt. But, I dont get the feeling things are all rosy with former players like they are at many other top schools.

I think this is true for IU but I also don't think it has much to do with the current coach or administration.  The fact is many IU fans or former IU fans are total Knight loyalists.  It is the same reason you still see Texas Tech gear around Indiana. I would imagine a lot of Knight's former players are in the same category.  I know for a fact that AJ Guyton says all the time that he is a Knight guy.  You can't discount the loyalty these guys have to their former coach.

Admittedly I did not hear Dakich today or Landon call in.  I have seen Landon at a lot of games throughout Crean's tenure and I believe he was honored before at least one of them.  In addition to the 1987 celebration someone noted above there has been numerous other occasions where former players were brought back.  Just off hand I can remember at Crean's first Hoosier Hysteria he brought back a large group of former players and at this year's Hoosier Hysteria as well.  Wasn't there a golf outing early in Crean's tenure with former plays too?

Again I did not hear Dakich or Landon and maybe Crean is less open with former players than most programs.  From the outside it does not seem like that and I am curious what is expected.

Stillman, I believe that Dakich is grabbing some attention, sorry that he's not coaching IU, and resentful of the way
Coach Knight was fired.
He (Dakich) spent years as errand boy for Coach Knight, and was in his confidence, hence the yearning for a Knight-like figure( strict, demanding, and with a terrific understanding of the game and how to defeat opponents). Those days are gone, and in many ways Dakich is like his mentor. He cannot let the Knight era die.

Dan, it's not coming back, he's not coming back, you're not coming back.

I don't dislike Dan Dakich. He was a hard-working player, a friend to players as a coach, and a dedicated university employee for years. Sometimes it takes time to find satisfaction in what you're doing and to let the next generation have their turn at what you've already done.

Bozich has always rubbed me the wrong way taking potshots at other reporters and sports minds, so this cracked me up:

@insidethehall: Funny that former players chose the day after a loss to Purdue to bring up that "they aren't treated well by IU." Laughable, really.

@dandakich: @insidethehall just be fanboy..don't join big boy conversations and discussions..

I still think Dakich was stirring the pot, but this got me.

I'm bias, I grew up with Alex and know his family.  However, if Bozich wants info he has to watch what he says about the program.  I'm sure if you talked with him privately his tone is a little different than what is posted on Inside the Hall.

About Dakich, he's going to poke and agitate to get more listeners.  I don't know what this particular incident is about but when Dakich goes into his rants I wish he would give more info.  He always dips his toes in but rarely tells all.
