Maryland memories

Recommended Posts

I don't have any good Maryland memories...

2002 National Championship game. Up with about 8 minutes to go and then blown out.

2003 rematch at IU. IU up 15 with 3 minutes to go and manage to blow the game.

Time to create a little positive mojo against Maryland this week.

Geez, I said it was my memory not reality...

Now I need to go back and figure out what game I was thinking of. Which game around 2002 or 2003 was IU up 15 with 3 minutes to go and still manages to lose?

Found it. Maryland/Minnesota.. close enough.

"TheThe Minnesota Golden Gopher men's basketball team (15-3, 3-2) erased a 13-point deficit with three minutes remaining to defeat the Indiana Hoosiers (11-8, 2-3) 78-74 in overtime at Williams Arena. The Gophers and the crowd at "The Barn" were too much for the Hoosiers as Minnesota forced 17 Indiana turnovers and won their 11th straight at Williams Arena."

If I remember the rematch correctly, Steve Blake hit a half court shot to win that was waved off after the officials watched the time clock on replay. The Hoosiers wound up winning in overtime

1981 second round game IU vs. Maryland.  Maryland jumped out to a quick lead and looked like they would blow the Hoosiers away.  I remember Knight just sitting quietly on the bench and really showing very little emotion.  TV timeout and boom, from that point forward we absolutely kicked the crap out of Maryland winning the game 99-64.  At one of the timeouts, the TV microphone got a little too close to the Maryland huddle and picked up Lefty Dreisell asking his team if they enjoyed getting embarrassed.

We should have won the 2002 championship game. We were much better than the twerps in that game. I need to watch that game and remember what happened. I was sooooo bummed out, i remember that.

Lonnie Baxter and Chris Wilcox happened. They owned the paint in the 2nd half. Hate those dudes lol.

I've admitted this here before. In 2002 I watched the championship game in Cole Field House with thousands of Maryland fans and enthusiastically greeted the team when they returned. My whole family are Maryland alums and a couple members worked there for decades.

But, shortly after when it came down to where to go for college and my final choices were Maryland or Indiana, I made the right choice. I was wrong then, but I've learned my lesson.

My favorite IU stretch, as those were my Bloomington days.  We packed to Assembly Hall to watch the Maryland game on the Jumbotron.  Nearly a full court screen.  It was incredible.  IU "should" have won that game but Juan Dixon was hot!  IU was not!

Just had an off game and Maryland was a good squad!  Steve Blake, Lonnie Baxter, Chris Wilcox, Byron Mouton
