Is IU currently reaching out to Brad Stevens through back channels?

Recommended Posts

I agree there are no guarantees Stevens would win chamionships, but one guarantee is Crean won't ever. I can promise if Stevens had our Cody and Vic team, banner 6 would be swinging. Just look at back to back final game appearances with Butler talent. Now imagine him recruiting at Indiana. We wukd wn the Big again and have our next great legacy coach.

and if Stevens were the coach then, we wouldn't have had a Cody and Vic team.  May have had a Cody team, but certainly no Vic on there.

Hiring any coach is going to be a crap shoot.  The way many are salivating over Stevens is the same way Texas Tech fans were probably salivating over Knight being hired,   Sure they got a little bit better, that that really didn't work out for them either.

I like Vic a lot but a Cody - Gordon Hayward back to back championship run would have been great.

I think we meet UK or Louisville in the sweet 16 this year and lose. The tourney has a history of putting 2/3 of IU/UK/Lville in the same bracket.

But I don't think a sweet 16 should constitute job security for Tom Crean. Even if we lose to the eventual champion in the sweet 16 he needs to go.

I'd be surprised as hell if we make the sweet sixteen!

No way we get to the Sweet 16. We don’t have any lottery picks on this team, let alone the TWO that Crean needs to get us there.

The sweet sixteen comment stemmed from my thought that we could attain that next year. If we reach that next year, even though the following year we go back to being young again, I doubt IU would fire Crean.

To answer the OP to some extent, I will rehash quickly what I said months ago.

I cannot say what has or has not happened since the season has started but I can say almost definitely what had happened prior to the start of the season. IU fans were not happy about IUs outlook and then all the off the court issues came out and people were calling for Creans head and many wondered if IU was going to hunt for a new coach and fire Crean at the end of the season. A family friend that was paramount in the Crean hiring and will be paramount in the hiring of Crean's replacement if it were to happen in the near future, paraphrasing, said this:

Glass is fully on board with Crean and until he isn't, there will be no search or back channel conversations. At least nobody will be advised to do so. That wasn't too long ago and considering we are 10-3, I highly doubt glass has changed his mind since the start of the season. Therefore, if I were a betting man, I would bet that nothing of the sort has happened.

This post should be re-published every time (and there are many) that this topic comes up.

Thanks.

Bob Knight brought TT out of the basketball shitter. He did more with less and made them a respectable program.

I'm just gonna say this, no matter who IU gets to coach, it's never gonna be good enough for some fans. Bob Knight left to big of a legacy for anyone to fill. And he ain't coming back ever in any capacity.

I don't buy this. Bobby Knight has been gone for 14 years and hadn't done anything of substance for 6 years. That's 20 years since Knight was THE MAN. Half of our fanbase today wasn't around for the Knight hay days and many of us that were have mixed feelings about him.

If we brought someone in that had the impact that Patino for say has had at Louisville, the majority would be more than happy

absolutely. Or Miller at Arizona even and they haven't won the big one but they have a chance every year.

#1. I'm not sure if I want the same people who hired Tom Crean to hire his replacement (just a thought).

#2 I think Glass has to publicly defend Crean for his own job security. But if glass wants job security in the long run, he's going to have to change some things.

I'm not so sure we make it next year. If Troy continues to improve I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave at the end of this season. I'm not saying he should but sometimes when people smell a buck they don't make the best decisions. Without him I'm not sure we are much better next year than this year.

When I see Clappy Crean on the bench, I am reminded of a Knight quote from the 1987 title run about LSU coach Dale Brown:

"I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown. Then I knew we had a chance."

I’m sure the other teams feel the same way about Tom Crean.

Honest question - why do you feel the need to call him Clappy? This is really for anyone who uses the term, just decided to ask on your post, so no offense or anything. I just don't get the need some feel to demean the guy just because they would prefer we have a different coach.

I just get tired of watching him pace the sidelines and clap when he should be coaching. Or working the refs. Or doing something.

Why do you consider my calling him "Clappy" demeaning? Is it not descriptive of his sideline behavior?
