Could Crean shake things up for the Grand Canyon game?

Recommended Posts

New to this forum so hello...

Just curious if anyone is interested in seeing Yogi, JBJ, NZ with RJ coming in to relieve Yogi. RJ taking over ball handling duties while Yogi is resting seems far more effective than having our boy Stan attempt to run the offense. I am in agreement with CH and NZ getting more time. I also believe that Troy has improved in some areas, but continues to play selfish ball. No reason for him to start after this latest display.

Hello and welcome to the board!

I would like to see a bigger lineup used at times such as when we are getting killed on the boards----Yogi--JBJ--Troy---Holt---Hanner or Yogi--JBJ---Hartman--Holt---Hanner.

Until DD gets back (hoping he does) the above lineup does not leave us with much interior depth---but it would give us both of our shot blockers in at the same time.

Are we talking about April?

He shouldn't be playing on an Indiana basketball team if we were at the level US fans want to be. Hanner has rock hands for sure. Happy with his play yesterday but whenever Hanner catches or handles the ball it's a an adventure. Maybe too early to officially judge April but all indications thus far and intel say he's not a great player.

That bounce pass from Rojo to April bounced off his shin. Not even close to a catch. Also a bad pass to a 7 footer.

Idk, I hate railing on Priller and April but IMO they are representations of Crean's recruiting blunders over the past year. Holt seems to be a major and shocking coup so who knows, but when you strike out as often as he did and end up with 2 star kids and an unbalanced team, something has to change.

April seems to have pretty soft hands from what I've seen. Heck, if I could cut his hands off and sew them to Hanner's arms I would. Sometimes I worry he has that disease where his skin slowly is turning to stone. Granted, he can keep his hands if he can play those first five minutes last night for longer in every single game.

I'm always wondering if we're going to see something suddenly surprising from Priller and April, like maybe they've been secretly hiding their mad skillz to startle an opposing team into submission. Hopefully.

Its really no different from starting Yogi, JBJ and RJ and subbing in NZ. They have RJ slide over and take over ball handling duties. Thats already happening every game.

I agree with waynefleek. If we really strive to be on the level of UK, Duke, etc., players like april and priller never even sniff an offer. I realize that's harsh, but it's just reality. Imo, they will never come close to having enough production to look back and say they deserved an offer. On the other hand, you need those couple players who have great attitudes and are willing to work hard like these two. You never play all 13 guys, so that bench encouragement and positivity is important. I just don't think anyone should expect much if any on the court production.

Actually, what would be most exciting to see is if coach puts both Perea and Holt in at the same time.
I'd really like to see how that combo works with JBJ, Rojo, and Yogi on the floor with them... just out of curiosity.

Hot damn! Somebody thinking like me here! Lol

I cannot take anything anyone says seriously if it has anything to do with J. April getting more playing time. If you have watched or know anything about basketball at all you would realizet this kid is a slightly (And I mean VERY slightly) more athletic Peter Jurkin. He should never see the floor unless it is Mop up time or unless he gets a new pair of hands sewn to his body.

In this situation I'd actually like to see April get a little more playing time for two reasons.
1) to see what abilities he has, if any, 2) for him to see whether his abilities can play at this level. If he can play and contribute at this level then great and we've learned something. If he can't play and contribute at this level then maybe HE has learned something and will make a decision going forward based on that knowledge.
For those clamoring for more of Hartman I'm not sure how much he can handle at this point. My original understanding was that his knee would probably keep him from playing at all this year. He's been a pleasant surprise but I'm not sure how heavy a workload he can handle right now.

We can all say April should not be on the team, but he is and from what I can tell might be are 3rd or 4th post option, so we might want to see what he can do in a game situation.

I think its a little shortsighted to write off a kid his Freshman year. A lot of people on here are making absolute statements on a kids future like they've watched him since middle school (no reference to middle school bob) and know everything about his game.

He might not be D1 talent, but right now he is an Indiana Hoosier and we might want to give him a chance, before we write him off.

I have been one of the ones being hard on J April. It is a little unfair because of how little everyone has seen of him. It is just pure speculation, but I see him as another Peter Jurkin. He may last another year even, but with CTC's recruiting habits I see this kid not developing at all and transfering at the end of this year or at the end of next year. I have no problem at all with JA getting some run at the end of these blowout games, but he never should have played in that Lville game. Again just my opinion. Hanner was in a little bit of fould trouble, but Emmitt never was. I see those two along with Morgan and OA next year being our inside threats. At no point in my opinion will JA ever be more than a scrub time player.

I can understand what everyone is saying about developing our talent, but like I said I do not see him being here for more than 1 or 2 years with Crean's turnstyle recruiting system. So it's hard for me to get excited when we put him on the floor when he will be playing for Franklin College or Georgia State next year.

UWE - I understand your point and I share some of your concerns.

I disagree with your point about only using JA during garbage time, but I believe that's just a difference in opinion, which is why we come on these boards in the first place.

Has he shown an ability to handle non-garbage time?

definitely not against UL. Such an odd substitution. We play all these scrub teams and JA doesn't get off the bench, but the 1st half of our biggest game of the year?

Yeah, I can't think of any reason for him to be in there unless he's going to challenge one of their bigs to a fist fight and see if he can get them both ejected.

Not sure I can answer that question with the little time I've seen him play. If he's shown promise in practice, I would say give him more playing time during the game. My preference would be for him to get time vs Grand Canyon compared to being forced to play vs Georgetown.

The discussion is difficult, because we don't have all the information. The key one would be how he's performing in practice.

I'm hoping to see him play to see what he can bring to the table.

If the coaching staff does not think he's ready, I'm all for him sitting the pine (but I hope if that's the case) ==> our next viewing of AP is not vs a team like Georgetown.

Personally I’d like to see him start the 2nd team against the 'Lopes. Give these guys a chance to play significant minutes and see what they can really do. Clearly IU will handle GCU without much effort, so why not give the starts to the #benchmob?

Z3
MSB
April
Holt
StonerStan

Bring Colin and Max in as first subs.

And get plenty of PT for Nate Ritchie and Ryan Burton.

Let’s see what these guys can do.

You can't be serious... smh

Coach put April in vs the 4th best team in the country, so I would like to see a little more than the 4-5 min court time before I make a judgement on April.

He might not be much (I don't know), but we don't have a whole lot of options in the post, so I say what the hell --> give the 7 ft guy a shot vs Grand Canyon and see what he can do. If his play in practice warrants more playing time, I'm all for it and I would like to see it before we're forced to use him vs GT.

coach put april in against the fourth best team in the country. Now we know what r problems r lol. I just cant see how u dont play a kid against crap teams much then throw him to the dogs in the first half in a giant arena on national television. I think r coach may b a little insane

Okay, find any coach at this level who would seriously start his bench out of lack of respect for the opponent.  I suspect you will struggle to find anyone to put on that list . Horrible idea.  Sure, let the bench play if it gets out of hand.  But not to start a game.  Never.
